Wide-area Internet traffic patterns and characteristics
- IEEE NETWORK
, 1997
"... The Internet is rapidly growing in number of users, traffic levels, and topological complexity. At the same time it is increasingly driven by economic competition. These developments render the characterization of network usage and workloads more difficult, and yet more critical. Few recent studies ..."

studies have been published reporting Internet backbone traffic usage and characteristics. At MCI, we have implemented a high-performance, low-cost monitoring system that can capture traffic and perform analyses. We have deployed this monitoring tool on OC-3 trunks within internetMCIâs backbone and also
PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF
"... ABSTRACT. Four identical PM10 pre-separators, along with four identical low-volume (1 m3 h−1) total suspended particulate (TSP) samplers were tested side-by-side in a controlled laboratory particulate matter (PM) chamber. The four PM10 and four TSP samplers were also tested in an oil pipe cleaning f ..."

field to evaluate the PM10 samplers ’ performance characteristics. The PMs used in the chamber tests had mass median diameters (MMDs) larger than 10 m, whereas the PM emitted from the oil pipe cleaning system for the field tests had MMD smaller than 10 m. The co-located TSP and PM10 sampler testing
The role of deliberate practice in the acquisition of expert performance
- Psychological Review
, 1993
"... The theoretical framework presented in this article explains expert performance as the end result of individuals ' prolonged efforts to improve performance while negotiating motivational and external constraints. In most domains of expertise, individuals begin in their childhood a regimen of ef ..."

of effortful activities (deliberate practice) designed to optimize improvement. Individual differences, even among elite performers, are closely related to assessed amounts of deliberate practice. Many characteristics once believed to reflect innate talent are actually the result of intense practice extended
Understanding packet delivery performance in dense wireless sensor networks
, 2003
"... Wireless sensor networks promise fine-grain monitoring in a wide variety of environments. Many of these environments (e.g., indoor environments or habitats) can be harsh for wireless communication. From a networking perspective, the most basic aspect of wireless communication is the packet delivery ..."

In this paper, we report on a systematic medium-scale (up to sixty nodes) measurement of packet delivery in three
Weighted Voting for Replicated Data
, 1979
"... In a new algorithm for maintaining replicated data, every copy of a replicated file is assigned some number of votes. Every transaction collects a read quorum of r votes to read a file, and a write quorum of w votes to write a file, such that r+w is greater than the total number number of votes assi ..."

The reliability and performance characteristics of a replicated file can be controlled by appropriately choosing

Abstract approved (Major professor) The local system of production, processing and distribution of fluid milk in the Portland-Vancouver market is under challenge. This challenge has originated in technological and institutional develop-ments which allow fluid milk to move longer distances. These deve-lopments, in turn., have resulted in distortions of the production-proces sing-distribution complex. Consequently, the structure of the fluid milk industry is changing. Local producers continue to supply the major portion of milk for local use; however, the production areas are undergoing a process of change. Raw milk from distant areas is now moving many miles to the metropolitan paarket. Processed packaged milk is being sold at even greater distances from centralized processing plants. Even with a growing population the number of pro-cessing plants has been materially reduced. Milk producers have tended to become fewer andlarger. In addition, the shift from home delivery to store distributionis continuing.
