Numerical weather prediction (NWP) now provides major guidance in our daily weather forecast. The accuracy of NWP models has improved steadily since the first successful experiment made by Charney, Fj!rtoft and von Neuman (1950). During the past 50 years, a large number of technical papers and reports have been devoted to NWP, but the number of textbooks dealing with the subject has been very small, the latest being the 1980 book by Haltiner & Williams, which was dedicated to descriptions of the atmospheric dynamics and numerical methods for atmospheric modeling. However, in the intervening years much impressive progress has been made in all aspects of NWP, including the success in model initialization and ensemble forecasts. Eugenia Kalnay’s recent book covers for the first time in the long history of NWP, not only methods for numerical modeling, but also the important related areas of data assimilation and predictability. It incorporates all aspects of environmental computer modeling including an historical overview of NWP, equations of motion and their approximations, a modern description of the methods to determine the initial conditions using weather observations and a clear discussion of chaos in dynamic systems and how these concepts can be

Maldacena has put forward large N correspondence between superconformal field theories on the brane and antide Sitter supergravity in spacetime. We study some aspects of the correspondence between N = 4 superconformal gauge theory on D3brane and maximal supergravity on adS5 × S5 by introducing macroscopic strings as heavy (anti)quark probes. The macroscopic strings are semiinfinite Type IIB strings ending on D3brane worldvolume. We first study deformation and fluctuation of D3brane when a macroscopic BPS string is attached. We find that both dynamics and boundary conditions agree with those for macroscopic string in antide Sitter supergravity. As a byproduct we clarify how Polchinski’s Dirichlet and Neumann open string boundary conditions arise. We then study nonBPS macroscopic string antistring pair configuration as physical realization of heavy quark Wilson loop. We obtain Q ¯ Q static potential and again find agreements between the gauge theory and the supergravity results. By turning on RamondRamond zeroform potential, we also study θ vacuum angle dependence of the static potential. We finally discuss dynamical realization of loop equation via turning on local electric field and recoil of heavy quark thereof, and of heavy baryon via of Nprong string junction. Throughout comparisons of the correspondence, we emphasize crucial role played by ‘geometric duality ’ between coordinates perpendicular to D3brane and parallel ones, hinting a possible explanation of emergence of the entire adS5 spacetime.

Certain two dimensional topological field theories can be interpreted as string theory backgrounds in which the usual decoupling of ghosts and matter does not hold. Like ordinary string models, these can sometimes be given spacetime interpretations. For instance, threedimensional ChernSimons gauge theory can arise as a string theory. The worldsheet model in this case involves a topological sigma model. Instanton contributions to the sigma model give rise to Wilson line insertions in the spacetime ChernSimons theory. A certain holomorphic analog of ChernSimons theory can also arise as a string theory.

The correspondence between supergravity (and string theory) on AdS space and boundary conformal field theory relates the thermodynamics of N = 4 super YangMills theory in four dimensions to the thermodynamics of Schwarzschild black holes in Antide Sitter space. In this description, quantum phenomena such as the spontaneous breaking of the center of the gauge group, magnetic confinement, and the mass gap are coded in classical geometry. The correspondence makes it manifest that the entropy of a very large AdS Schwarzschild black hole must scale “holographically ” with the volume of its horizon. By similar methods, one can also make a speculative proposal for the description of large N gauge theories in four dimensions without supersymmetry. March
