The Determinants of Credit Spread Changes.
- Journal of Finance
, 2001
"... ABSTRACT Using dealer's quotes and transactions prices on straight industrial bonds, we investigate the determinants of credit spread changes. Variables that should in theory determine credit spread changes have rather limited explanatory power. Further, the residuals from this regression are ..."

is that, after controlling for these aggregate determinants, the systematic movement of credit spread changes still remains, and indeed, is the dominant factor. Brown The rest of the paper is organized as follows. In Section I, we examine the theoretical determinants of credit spread changes from a
Précis of "The number sense"
"... Number sense " is a short-hand for our ability to quickly understand, approximate, and manipulate numerical quantities. My hypothesis is that number sense rests on cerebral circuits that have evolved specifically for the purpose of representing basic arithmetic knowledge. Four lines of evidence ..."

representations of number notations. The neural and cognitive organization of those representations can explain why some mathematical concepts are intuitive, while others are so difficult to grasp. Thus, the ultimate foundations of mathematics rests on core representations that have been internalized in our
What Rests On What? The Proof-Theoretic Analysis Of Mathematics
- Proc. 15 th International Wittgenstein Symposium

Wavelets: The Mathematical Background
- Proc. IEEE

Social constructivism as a philosophy of mathematics: Radical constructivism rehabilitated. Accessed
, 1999
"... Epistemological issues, although controversial, are central to teaching and learning and have long been a theme of PME. A central epistemological issue is that of the philosophy of mathematics. It is argued that the traditional absolutist philosophies need to be replaced by a conceptual change view ..."

of mathematics. A consequence is that the criticism that radical constructivism is necessarily solipsistic is overcome. It is widely recognised that all practice and theories of learning and teaching rest on an epistemology, whether articulated or not. As Rene Thom puts it, for mathematics: "In fact
Transport equations with resting phases
- Coupled Dynamics and Quiescent Phases 23

This model has direct applications in ecology (e.g. homeranges, territoriality, stream ecosystems, travelling waves) or cellular biology (e.g ..."

This provides general insight into the features of these models, which in turn is useful in the modelling process. We consider a singular perturbation expansion

The independent sizing of the redox system's power and storage capacity makes it particularly attractive for long term electricity storage in remote areas where solar arrays or wind generators have been installed. An at-tractive feature of the vanadium redox battery is that since there is no solution contaminat ion due to cross-mixing, after the original capital investment, there would be negligible running and maintenance costs. Since the cell can be completely discharged without any deterioration i performance, it would be ideally suited for large scale energy storage in load leveling applica-tions. A larger scale five-cell battery unit is currently under construction so that the system performance can be fur-ther tested before scaling up to a 1 kW unit. The Mathematics of Moving Contact Lines in Thin Liquid Films
, 1998

An ongoing challenge is to explain the underlying physics of the motion of a contact line, a triple juncture of the solid/air, solid/liquid, and liquid/air interfaces. When the system is at rest, the three interfacial energies, determined by the energy per unit area
Applying Streaming Algorithms to Data at Rest
"... Guided navigation [5] is fundamental for the Oracle Big Data Discovery product. Our customers need to know the most frequent elements in their datasets, and the number of elements of a partic-ular kind. In Figure 1, for the winetype property, we use a query that returns the top 6 kinds of wines (‘Re ..."
