Modeling a probabilistic ontology for maritime domain awareness

by Rommel N. Carvalho, Richard Haberlin, Paulo Cesar, G. Costa, Kathryn B. Laskey, Kc Chang - in Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Fusion , 2011
"... Abstract—Situational awareness and prediction are essential elements of information fusion. Both involve various types of uncertainty and require a sound automated inferential process. Probabilistic ontologies support uncertainty management in semantically aware systems, and facilitate modular, inte ..."

, interoperable systems. This paper describes the process of developing a probabilistic ontology for a Maritime Domain Awareness application. The ontology was created to support identification of ships behaving suspiciously enough to be declared ships of interest. The original model was expanded in two ways

Unmanned vehicles are becoming a critical component of military operations. As the vehicles develop in capability, there will be a trend for heterogeneous classes of unmanned vehicles to be able to work in a more collaborative fashion. This paper discusses the research initiatives by the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Research for achieving greater effectiveness in naval operations through collaborative behavior. It focuses on three separate initiatives and discusses results from recent Tactical Network Topology (TNT) experiments. 1
