Secure Live VM Migration in Cloud Computing: A Survey

by Suresh B. Rathod, Vaddeswaram Vijayawada, Vaddeswaram Vijayawada
"... Cloud computing (CC) refers to delivering applications, platform used to execute user application and Infrastructure to fulfill user hardware requirement as a service over internet. Virtual Machine (VM) is normally stored on Datacenters who consist of set of physical servers where VM is executing to ..."

VMM manages VM execution, decides which VM to be selected for migration and how VM to be migrated. VM migration can be done by considering centralize VM migration or distributed approach. Once

Live Migration of Virtual Machines

by Christopher Clark, Keir Fraser, Steven H, Jakob Gorm Hansen, Eric Jul, Christian Limpach, Ian Pratt, Andrew Warfield - In Proceedings of the 2nd ACM/USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation (NSDI , 2005
"... Migrating operating system instances across distinct physical hosts is a useful tool for administrators of data centers and clusters: It allows a clean separation between hardware and software, and facilitates fault management, load balancing, and low-level system maintenance. By carrying out the ma ..."

the majority of migration while OSes continue to run, we achieve impressive performance with minimal service downtimes; we demonstrate the migration of entire OS instances on a commodity cluster, recording service downtimes as low as 60ms. We show that that our performance is sufficient to make live migration

The embryonic cell lineage of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

by J. E. Sulston, H. R. Horvitz - Dev. Biol , 1983
"... The number of nongonadal nuclei in the free-living soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans increases from about 550 in the newly hatched larva to about 810 in the mature hermaphrodite and to about 970 in the mature male. The pattern of cell divisions which leads to this increase is essentially invarian ..."

However, service levels of running applications are likely to be negatively affected during a live VM migration. For this reason, a better understanding of its effects on system performance is highly

Open source Linux virtualization, such as Xen and KVM, has made great progress recently, and has been a hot topic in Linux world for years. With virtualization support, the hypervisor de-privileges operating systems as guest operating systems and shares physical resources among guests, such as memory and the network device. For device virtualization, some mechanisms are intro-duced for improving performance. Paravirtualized (PV) drivers are implemented to avoid excessive guest and hypervisor switching and thus achieve better perfor-mance, for example Xen’s split virtual network inter-face driver (VNIF). Unlike software optimization in PV driver, IOMMU, such as Intel R © Virtualization Technol-ogy for Directed I/O, AKA VT-d, enables direct passing
