Online Aggregation

by Joseph M. Hellerstein, Peter J. Haas, Helen J. Wang , 1997
"... Aggregation in traditional database systems is performed in batch mode: a query is submitted, the system processes a large volume of data over a long period of time, and, eventually, the final answer is returned. This archaic approach is frustrating to users and has been abandoned in most other area ..."

Computer Response to User Frustration

by T. Klein, Certified Rosalind, W. Picard, Accepted Stephen, A. Benton, Jonathan Klein, Jonathan T. Klein , 1999
"... Use of computer technology often has unpleasant side effects, some of which are strong, negative emotional states that arise in humans during interaction with computers. Frustration, confusion, anger, anxiety and similar emotional states can affect not only the interaction itself, but also productiv ..."

productivity, learning, social relationships, and overall well-being. This thesis presents the idea of designing human-computer interaction systems to actively support human users in their ability to regulate, manage, and recover from their own negative emotional states, particularly frustration. Modeling Searcher Frustration

by Henry Feild, James Allan
"... When search engine users have trouble finding what they are looking for, they become frustrated. In a pilot study, we found that 36 % of queries submitted end with users being moderately to extremely frustrated. By modeling searcher frustration, search engines can predict the current state of user f ..."

to test the proposed solution in a situation where users were feeling frustration. The agent's text-only interaction used components of active listening, empathy, and sympathy, in an effort to support users in their ability to recover from frustration. The agent's effectiveness was evaluated

Determining causes and severity of end-user frustration

by Irina Ceaparu, Jonathan Lazar, Katie Bessiere, John Robinson, Ben Shneiderman - International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction , 2004
"... Although computers are beneficial to individuals and society, frequently users encounter frustrating experiences when using computers. This study represents an attempt to measure, in 111 participants, the frequency, the cause, and the level of severity of frustrating experiences. The data show that ..."

Frustrating the User on Purpose . . .

by Jocelyn Scheirer, Raul Fern, Jonathan Klein, Rosalind W. Picard
"... Using social science methods to induce a state of frustration in users, we collected physiological, video and behavioral data, and developed a strategy for coupling these data with real-world events. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy was tested in a study with thirty-six subjects, whe ..."

INTRODUCTION A class of risk factor or stressor of increasing interest to the development of work related musculoskeletal disorders are psychosocial factors. These psychosocial factors have already been demonstrated epidemiologically to have etiologic importance for cardiovascular disease. In the macro environment, the occupational psychosocial stressor most consistently associated with musculoskeletal disorders is decision latitude or autonomy (Bongers et al., 2002). Job tasks, mental work load, and verbal coaching have been associated with an increase in exposure to physical and biomechanical stress to the musculoskeletal system associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (Wahlstrom et al., 2002; Davis et al., 2002; Van Galen et al., 2002). Both Davis et al., (2002) and Van Galen et al., (2002) added mental tasks while individuals completed either a manual materials handling or computer task, respectively. During manual materials handling, extra mental work load and work

OR SICK AND FRUSTRATED?

by Lynne Armitage, Ann Murugan

Adopting the proposition that the effect on people using, interacting or working in a ‘green ’ workplace environment is not currently clear nor fully understood, the purpose of this research is to examine what the green workplace environment is like from the perspective of one of this sub group – th ..."

This study examines and compares responses between employees in green and in non-green workplace environments in order to determine if a gap exists between the satisfaction and health levels of these two groups

Predicting Searcher Frustration

by Henry Feild, James Allan, Rosie Jones

In a user study in which participants were given difficult information seeking tasks, half of all queries submitted resulted in some ..."
