Exceptional Situations in Lisp
, 1985
"... Frequently, it is convenient to describe a program in terms of the normal situations in which it will be used, even if such a description does not describe the its complete behavior in all circumstances. This paper surveys the issues surrounding the description of program behavior in exceptional sit ..."

Exceptional Situations And Program Reliability
, 2005
"... It is difficult to write programs that behave correctly in the presence of run-time errors. Proper behavior in the face of exceptional situations is important to the reliability of long-running programs. Existing programming language features often provide poor support for executing clean-up code an ..."

Reasoning on Exceptional Situations with a Model of Expectation
"... Abstract. Treating exceptional situations in logic-based agents is often an implicit mechanism due to the capabililities of their reasoning engines. We argue in this paper that explicit mechanisms can provide interesting knowledge to the agent and its owner about its execution, thus allowing more el ..."

Finding bugs in exceptional situations of JNI programs
- In Proceedings of the 16th ACM conference on Computer and communications security (CCS
, 2009
"... Software flaws in native methods may defeat Java’s guarantees of safety and security. One common kind of flaws in native methods results from the discrepancy on how exceptions are handled in Java and in native methods. Unlike exceptions in Java, exceptions raised in the native code through the Java ..."

Adapting transactions to exceptional situations using structured messages
- In Proc. Int’l Symp.Database Applications in Non-Traditional Environments(DANTE’99
, 1999
"... We concentrate on the property that the progression of collaborative work involves communication among participants, and we consider a flexible method for managing transactions utilizing structured messages. In the literature, advanced transaction models for collaborative work environment have been ..."

proposed. However, since the models treat work process as a target of transaction, it is difficult to adapt to exceptions or dynamic reconfiguration of processes. In this paper, we argue about examples of handling exceptions in an environment involving workflow processes and database transactions
Effective Museum Sightseeing Crowdedness Avoidance Algorithm Considering Exceptional Situations
"... As ubiquitous computing technology convergences into many industrial domains, most museums want to apply this technique to their domain. However, most ubiquitous museums merely provide the simplest service giving visitors only static information of artifact. To resolve limitations of the existing ub ..."

However, since the Visitor Preference based Museum Viewing Search Algorithm did not consider abnormal situations that occur while visitors look
Case Study Postpneumonectomy-like syndrome after lobectomy: An exceptional situation
"... Postpneumonectomy syndrome is a rare complication occurring after pneumonectomy. It is defined as extrinsic com-pression of a bronchus associated with a significant shift of the mediastinum. Postpneumonectomy syndrome is a rare complication occurring after pneumonectomy. It is defined as extrinsic com-pression of a bronchus associated with a significant shift of the mediastinum. A man aged 45 years with history of C7 tetraparesis, presented with a postpneumonectomy-like syndrome 2 months after a right lower lobectomy. We per-formed a right pneumonectomy combined with implantation of 2 intrathoracic inflatable mammary implants. The patient remained asymptomatic after 6 months of follow-up. We believe this is the first reported case of a postpneumonectomy-like syndrome occurring after lobectomy.
An extensive empirical study of feature selection metrics for text classification
- J. of Machine Learning Research
, 2003
"... Machine learning for text classification is the cornerstone of document categorization, news filtering, document routing, and personalization. In text domains, effective feature selection is essential to make the learning task efficient and more accurate. This paper presents an empirical comparison ..."

in different situations. The results reveal that a new feature selection metric we call ‘Bi-Normal Separation ’ (BNS), outperformed the others by a substantial margin in most situations. This margin widened in tasks with high class skew, which is rampant in text classification problems and is particularly
Motivation through the Design of Work: Test of a Theory. Organizational Behavior and Human Performance,
, 1976
"... A model is proposed that specifies the conditions under which individuals will become internally motivated to perform effectively on their jobs. The model focuses on the interaction among three classes of variables: (a) the psychological states of employees that must be present for internally motiv ..."

such methodologies are developed, it will remain impractical to use activation theory in predicting or changing employee reactions to their jobs except in a very gross fashion; e.g., in situations where it is clear that most employees are enormously over-or understimulated by their jobs. A second problem has to do
Concentration Of Measure And Isoperimetric Inequalities In Product Spaces
, 1995
"... The concentration of measure phenomenon in product spaces roughly states that, if a set A in a product# N of probability spaces has measure at least one half, "most" of the points of# N are "close" to A. We proceed to a systematic exploration of this phenomenon. The meaning o ..."

of the word "most" is made rigorous by isoperimetric-type inequalities that bound the measure of the exceptional sets. The meaning of the work "close" is defined in three main ways, each of them giving rise to related, but different inequalities. The inequalities are all proved through a
