To many students of beginning algebra, it must appear t h a t algebra is just a matter of formal manipulations. But this is not true. As Middlemiss (1953) points out in the Preface, solving an equation f(x) = g(x) to get x = a is equivalent t o proving if f(x) = g(x), then x = a. Furthermore, checking that f(a) = g(a) is equivalent to p r o ving the converse.
