Intro: Deformation Mechanism Maps

by A. Ionic , 2005
"... As depth increases, pressure and temperature increase as well. Rate-dependent (creep, crytal-plastic, viscous) processes favored. Pressure dependent (brittle, frictional, dilatant) processes de-emphasized. The lower four mechanisms involve the production, motion, and consumption of crystal defects. ..."

Quartzo-feldspathic granulites are probably the most intensely studied deep-seated rocks with respect to quartz textures. Few microfabric studies explain crystallographic preferred orienta-tion (CPO) of plagioclase as a result of dislocation motion on the (010)[001] and (010)[100] (Ji and Mainprice 1988) in gran-ulite facies conditions. Diffusion-accomodated grain boundary sliding was described from very fine-grained quartzofeldspath-ic high-grade mylonites (Behrman and Mainprice 1987). The diffusional creep is also enhanced by the presence of granitic melt (Dell’Angelo and Tullis 1988). The well equilibrated microstructure of granulite matrix is commonly interpreted by petrologists as a product of extensive solid state static annealing (Spry 1969). Emphasis is placed on the geometrical and morphological characteristics as the lack of like/like contacts between constituent minerals (Mc Lellan 1983)

Stochastic relaxation, Gibbs distributions and the Bayesian restoration of images.

by Stuart Geman , Donald Geman - IEEE Trans. Pattern Anal. Mach. Intell. , 1984
"... Abstract-We make an analogy between images and statistical mechanics systems. Pixel gray levels and the presence and orientation of edges are viewed as states of atoms or molecules in a lattice-like physical system. The assignment of an energy function in the physical system determines its Gibbs di ..."

Load transfer and deformation mechanisms in carbon nanotube-polystyrene composites

by D. Qian, E. C. Dickey A, R. Andrews, T. Rantell - Applied Physics Letters,76 , 2000
"... Multiwall carbon nanotubes have been dispersed homogeneously throughout polystyrene matrices by a simple solution-evaporation method without destroying the integrity of the nanotubes. Tensile tests on composite films show that 1 wt % nanotube additions result in 36%–42 % and 25% increases in elasti ..."
