Wide-area Internet traffic patterns and characteristics

by Kevin Thompson, Gregory J. Miller, Rick Wilder - IEEE NETWORK , 1997
"... The Internet is rapidly growing in number of users, traffic levels, and topological complexity. At the same time it is increasingly driven by economic competition. These developments render the characterization of network usage and workloads more difficult, and yet more critical. Few recent studies ..."

N Degrees of Separation: Multi-Dimensional Separation of Concerns

by Peri Tarr, Harold Ossher, William Harrison, Stanley M. Sutton, Jr. - IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOFTWARE ENGINEERING , 1999
"... Done well, separation of concerns can provide many software engineering benefits, including reduced complexity, improved reusability, and simpler evolution. The choice of boundaries for separate concerns depends on both requirements on the system and on the kind(s) of decompositionand composition a ..."

given formalism supports. The predominant methodologies and formalisms available, however, support only orthogonal separations of concerns, along single dimensions of composition and decomposition. These characteristics lead to a number of well-known and difficult problems. This paper describes a new

Compositional Characteristics of Disordered Regions in Proteins

by Russ B. Altman, Christopher Hughers, Oleg Jardetzky
"... Many high resolution protein structures derived from crystallographic studies contain regions in which the temperature factor (or B-factor, a measure related inversely to occupancy) is large. These regions can have low occupancy for two (not mutually exclusive) reasons; either there is motion within ..."

, we have investigated the characteristics of high B-factor regions within otherwise well-resolved protein structures. Most noteworthy, we have shown that amino acids LYS, SER, GLN, ALA, GLU, PRO, ASN, ASP and ARG occur more frequently in disordered regions, that 40% of disordered residues are in coil

Predicting memorization efficiency through compositional characteristics

by Jennifer Mishra , 1184

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was to describe and quantify biologically labile and refractory phosphorus runoff in Eight-Mile Run, a small watershed in west-central Wisconsin that is impacted by dairy livestock management. BACKGROUND: There is a need to manage eutrophication problems in Corps of Engineers receiving waters by reducing losses of soils and associated soluble nutrients (primarily phosphorus) in intensively managed agricultural land-use settings that are hydrologically sensitive to runoff. In many agricultural watersheds, livestock is contained in relatively small areas for long periods of time, leading to overgrazing and loss of perennial cover, disruption of the soil surface, and the buildup of nutrients in the soil via manure incorporation that can become a source to receiving waters during runoff events. Bank erosion and decimation of adjacent buffer strips by livestock that is allowed to forage along tributaries can further exacerbate soil and nutrient erosion and runoff. To forecast the impacts of watershed rehabilitation and Best Management Practices (BMPs) on hydraulic and nutrient loadings, models need to be refined to address the impacts of various land-use practices such as livestock production and management on concentrations and loads of sediment and important nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in rivers and streams draining watersheds.
