Abstract: Recent progress in underwater robotics and acoustic communication has led to the development of a new paradigm in ocean science and technology, the Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network (AOSN). AOSN consists of a network of xed moorings and/or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), tied together by state-of-the-art acoustic communication technology. The GOATS'2000 (Generic Oceano-graphic Array Technology Systems) Joint Research Program is aimed toward the de-velopment of environmentally adaptive AOSN technology specically directed toward Rapid Environmental Assessment and Mine Counter Measures in coastal environ-ments. The research program combines theory and modeling of the 3-D environmental acoustics with experiments involving AOSN and sensor technology. [Work supported by ONR and SACLANT]

Signal processing for synthetic aperture sonar image enhancement

by Hayden J. Callow , 2003
"... This thesis contains a description of SAS processing algorithms, offering improvements in Fourier-based reconstruction, motion-compensation, and autofocus. Fourier-based image reconstruction is reviewed and improvements shown as the result of improved system modelling. A number of new algorithms bas ..."

EFFECT OF MULTIPATH ON SYNTHETIC APERTURE SONAR

by A Bellettini , M Pinto , L Wang
"... Abstract The performance of real or synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) in shallow waters is degraded by multipath, which leads to ghost targets and reduced image contrast. This loss of image contrast fills in acoustic shadows and is therefore an important limitation for high resolution SAS applications ..."
