The brain and body provide a wealth of information about a person’s physiological, cognitive and emotional states. There is an increasing trend to use physiological signals in computerised systems as an input control, and as entry level physiological sensors become more widespread, physiological interfaces are liable to be-come more pervasive in our society (e.g., through mo-bile phones). While these signals offer new and exciting means for controlling interactive systems, little ques-tioning has been done whether or not these physiologi-cal interfaces are appropriate for applications and to what extent the end-user finds the interaction mean-ingful. This workshop sets out to bring together re-searchers working in the psychophysiological interac-tion field for discussing the nature of making physio-logical interactions meaningful for users.

In this paper the authors reflect upon the past thirty years since the emergence and public awareness of what Castells describes as the network society [1] with the shifts in a social temporal consciousness that are evidenced through popular cinema. The short paper contextualizes slow technology within larger societal concerns for time, before introducing four epoch’s within recent cinema that give insight into the condition of a social temporal consciousness.

Much of today’s information is digitised; representation of information is increasing becoming digital. Yet, paper books remain popular, as many readers prefer the reading experience that paper books provide that digital interfaces cannot. In this paper, our aim is to improve users ’ reading experience by augmenting books with digital functionalities. We conducted a user survey study to identify features that users desire. The study highlights one specific feature – content searching within books, and we discuss three design choices to incorporate digital searching in paper books.

Designers of mobile context-aware systems are struggling with the problem of conceptually incorporating the real world into the system design. We present a body-centric modeling framework (as opposed to device-centric) that incorporates physical and virtual objects of interest on the basis of proximity and human perception, framed in the context of an emerging “egocentric ” interaction paradigm.

Tool Support for Creativity using Externalizations Within the creativity community, researchers and practitioners have developed and studied various support tools and environments. It is important to learn from these tools and environments, identifying requirements for improving the future support of creativity in design. In this paper, we focus on support for generating and interacting with external representations to facilitate shared understanding and common ground amongst stakeholders. In considering external representations, we distinguish between artifacts provided by the tools and boundary objects created by the participants. We evaluate the use of a particular creativity support tool: the Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory (EDC). From this evaluation we identify requirements for future tools and environments to support creative design.

Shoogle is a novel, intuitive interface for sensing data within a mobile device, such as presence and properties of text messages or remaining resources. It is based around active exploration: devices are shaken, revealing the contents rattling around “inside”. Vibrotactile display and realistic impact sonification create a compelling system. Inertial sensing is used for completely eyes-free, single-handed interaction that is entirely natural. Prototypes are described running both on a PDA and on a mobile phone with a wireless sensor pack. Scenarios of use are explored where active sensing is more appropriate than the dominant alert paradigm.

Information retrieval or search plays an important role in a wide range of information management and electronic commerce tasks. In spite of the importance of information retrieval, search systems are often poorly designed from a human computer interaction perspective. The goal of this SIG is to articulate some of the opportunities and challenges in designing and evaluating highly interactive information retrieval systems. Author Keywords Information retrieval, Information visualization, User interface, Interactive systems design and evaluation
