GEOMETRIC SET COVER AND HITTING SETS
"... Abstract. Suppose we are given a finite set of points P in R 3 and a collection of polytopes T that are all translates of the same polytope T. We consider two problems in this paper. The first is the set cover problem where we want to select a minimal number of polytopes from the collection T such t ..."

T such that their union covers all input points P. The second problem that we consider is finding a hitting set for the set of polytopes T, that is, we want to select a minimal number of points from the input points P such that every given polytope is hit by at least one point. We give the first constant
Point line cover: The easy kernel is essentially tight

, 2014
"... The input to the NPhard POINT LINE COVER problem (PLC) consists of a set P of n points on the plane and a positive integer k, and the question is whether there exists a set of at most k lines which pass through all points in P. By straightforward reduction rules one can efficiently reduce any input ..."

2010). It has two main ingredients: We first show, by reduction from VERTEX COVER, that— unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses—PLC has no kernel of total size O(k2−ε) bits. This does not directly imply the claimed lower bound on the number of points, since the best known polynomialtime encoding
Planning Algorithms

Convex Analysis
, 1970
"... In this book we aim to present, in a unified framework, a broad spectrum of mathematical theory that has grown in connection with the study of problems of optimization, equilibrium, control, and stability of linear and nonlinear systems. The title Variational Analysis reflects this breadth. For a lo ..."

was the exploration of variations around a point, within the bounds imposed by the constraints, in order to help characterize solutions and portray them in terms of ‘variational principles’. Notions of perturbation, approximation and even generalized differentiability were extensively investigated. Variational theory
KodairaSpencer theory of gravity and exact results for quantum string amplitudes
 Commun. Math. Phys
, 1994
"... We develop techniques to compute higher loop string amplitudes for twisted N = 2 theories with ĉ = 3 (i.e. the critical case). An important ingredient is the discovery of an anomaly at every genus in decoupling of BRST trivial states, captured to all orders by a master anomaly equation. In a particu ..."

Graphical models, exponential families, and variational inference
, 2008
"... The formalism of probabilistic graphical models provides a unifying framework for capturing complex dependencies among random variables, and building largescale multivariate statistical models. Graphical models have become a focus of research in many statistical, computational and mathematical fiel ..."

Working with exponential family representations, and exploiting the conjugate duality between the cumulant function and the entropy for exponential families, we develop general variational representations of the problems of computing
FAST VOLUME RENDERING USING A SHEARWARP FACTORIZATION OF THE VIEWING TRANSFORMATION
, 1995
"... Volume rendering is a technique for visualizing 3D arrays of sampled data. It has applications in areas such as medical imaging and scientific visualization, but its use has been limited by its high computational expense. Early implementations of volume rendering used bruteforce techniques that req ..."

Algorithms with optimizations that exploit coherence in the data have reduced rendering times to the range of ten seconds but are still not fast enough for interactive visualization applications. the rapidly developing systematic connections between FPT and useful heuristic algorithms a new and exciting bridge between the theory of computing and computing in practice. The organizers of the seminar strongly believe that knowledge of parameterized complexity techniques and results belongs into the toolkit of every algorithm designer. The purpose of the seminar was to bring together leading experts from all over the world, and from the diverse areas of computer science that have been attracted to this new framework. The seminar was intended as the rst larger international meeting with a specic focus on parameterized complexity, and it hopefully serves as a driving force in the development of the eld. 1 We had 49 participants from Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, USA, and various European countries. During the workshop 25 lectures were given. Moreover, one night session was devoted to open problems and Thursday was basically used for problem discussion
