The spectre of climate change that is unfolding now is undeniably a cumulative impact of anthropogenic interference in the climate system over the last two centuries. The science is clear and the policy community is being increasingly convinced and galvanised into action to address this emergent challenge in light of the associated economic and human dimensions. The impacts of climate change ranging from sea level rise, melting ice caps and glaciers, severe weather events, drought, flooding, warming, subtle changes in ecosystems – will impinge on every aspect of society and economic life. The costs of inaction will more than outweigh the costs of action. There is only a narrow window of opportunity to redress the situation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its Fourth Assessment Report has

MAPPING SOIL SALINITY USING COLLOCATED COKRIGING IN BAHARIYA OASIS,

by Kh. M. Darwish, M. M. Kotb, R. Ali
"... The mapping of saline soils is the first task before any reclamation effort can be conducted. Soil salinity is determined, traditionally, by soil sampling and laboratory analysis. Recently, it became possible to complement these hard data with soft secondary data made available using field sensors l ..."

Mapping of soil salinity based on field measured spectra and ALI image in Yellow River Delta

by Yongling Weng A, Jinmei Tao, Xingwang Fan, Yuejin Sha

Remote sensing is widely viewed as a time- and cost-efficient way for detection of soil salinity. In this study, we collected 55 soil samples and corresponding field spectra from t ..."

Multi-scale variability of soil salinity in the Yellow River Delta

by P. Gongb, G H. Liuc
"... Analysis and interpretation of spatial variability of soil salinity is a keystone in site-specific farming. To better understand patters of multi-scale spatial variability in soil salinity, soil samples (30 to 40 cm depth) were collected with separation distances of 0.04, 0.2, 1 and 6 km in the Yell ..."

ARCTIC Dynamics and Origin of Saline Soils on the Slims River Delta,

by Stuart A. Harris , 1989

Deep seasonal frost on the delta prevents downward leaching of salts when the snow melts. Instead the salts accumulate at the surface as the ground d ..."

MAPPING SURFACE SYMPTOMS OF DRYLAND SALINITY WITH HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGERY

by Anna Dutkiewicz, Megan Lewis A, Bertram Ostendorf
"... Hyperspectral images from three sensors were compared for their ability to discriminate and map selected symptoms of salinity in a dryland agricultural area in southern Australia. The symptoms mapped are widespread in this environment: the perennial halophytic shrub samphire (Halosarcia pergranulata ..."

, previous multispectral salinity mapping in the same area required multitemporal imagery and ancillary topographic and soils data to achieve comparable discrimination of surface salt. The hyperspectral mapping identified some saline areas that had not been delineated in previous aerial
