Synthesis of Child Speech With HMM Adaptation and Voice Conversion
"... Abstract—The synthesis of child speech presents challenges both in the collection of data and in the building of a synthesizer from that data. We chose to build a statistical parametric synthesizer using the hidden Markov model (HMM)-based system HTS, as this technique has previously been shown to p ..."

HMM adaptation and voice conversion for the synthesis of child speech: a comparison
"... This study compares two different methodologies for producing data-driven synthesis of child speech from existing systems that have been trained on the speech of adults. On one hand, an existing statistical parametric synthesiser is transformed using model adaptation techniques, informed by linguist ..."

This paper discusses the challenges in computer systems research posed by the emerging field of pervasive computing. It first examines the relationship of this new field to its predecessors: distributed systems and mobile computing. It then identifies four new research thrusts: effective use of smart spaces, invisibility, localized scalability, and masking uneven conditioning. Next, it sketches a couple of hypothetical pervasive computing scenarios, and uses them to identify key capabilities missing from today's systems. The paper closes with a discussion of the research necessary to develop these capabilities.

Ptolemy is an environment for simulation and prototyping of heterogeneous systems. It uses modern object-oriented software technology (C++) to model each subsystem in a natural and efficient manner, and to integrate these subsystems into a whole. Ptolemy encompasses practically all aspects of designing signal processing and communications systems, ranging from algorithms and communication strategies, simulation, hardware and software design, parallel computing, and generating real-time prototypes. To accommodate this breadth, Ptolemy must support a plethora of widely-differing design styles. The core of Ptolemy is a set of object-oriented class definitions that makes few assumptions about the system to be modeled; rather, standard interfaces are provided for generic objects and more specialized, application-specific objects are derived from these. A basic abstraction in Ptolemy is the Domain, which realizes a computational model appropriate for a particular type of subsystem. Current e...

... This paper provides an up-to-date critical survey of still- and video-based face recognition research. There are two underlying motivations for us to write this survey paper: the first is to provide an up-to-date review of the existing literature, and the second is to offer some insights into the studies of machine recognition of faces. To provide a comprehensive survey, we not only categorize existing recognition techniques but also present detailed descriptions of representative methods within each category. In addition,

This dissertation is a defense of the hypothesis that the noun phrase is headed by afunctional element (i.e., \non-lexical " category) D, identi ed with the determiner. In this way, the structure of the noun phrase parallels that of the sentence, which is headed by In (ection), under assumptions now standard within the Government-Binding (GB) framework. The central empirical problem addressed is the question of the proper analysis of the so-called \Poss-ing " gerund in English. This construction possesses simultaneously many properties of sentences, and many properties of noun phrases. The problem of capturing this dual aspect of the Possing construction is heightened by current restrictive views of X-bar theory, which, in particular, rule out the obvious structure for Poss-ing, [NP NP VPing], by virtue of its exocentricity. Consideration of languages in which nouns, even the most basic concrete nouns, show agreement (AGR) with their possessors, points to an analysis
