A Structural Approach to Operational Semantics
, 1981
"... Syntax of a very simple programming language called L. What is abstract about it will be discussed a little here and later at greater length. For us syntax is a collection of syntactic sets of phrases; each set corresponds to a different type of phrase. Some of these sets are very simple and can be ..."

Opportunistic Beamforming Using Dumb Antennas
 IEEE Transactions on Information Theory
, 2002
"... Multiuser diversity is a form of diversity inherent in a wireless network, provided by independent timevarying channels across the different users. The diversity benefit is exploited by tracking the channel fluctuations of the users and scheduling transmissions to users when their instantaneous cha ..."

channel quality is near the peak. The diversity gain increases with the dynamic range of the fluctuations and is thus limited in environments with little scattering and/or slow fading. In such environments, we propose the use of multiple transmit antennas to induce large and fast channel fluctuations so
The empirical case for two systems of reasoning
, 1996
"... Distinctions have been proposed between systems of reasoning for centuries. This article distills properties shared by many of these distinctions and characterizes the resulting systems in light of recent findings and theoretical developments. One system is associative because its computations ref ..."

The unity and diversity of executive functions and their contributions to complex “Frontal Lobe” tasks: a latent variable analysis
 Cognit Psychol
, 2000
"... This individual differences study examined the separability of three often postulated executive functions—mental set shifting (‘‘Shifting’’), information updating and monitoring (‘‘Updating’’), and inhibition of prepotent responses (‘‘Inhibition’’)—and their roles in complex ‘‘frontal lobe’ ’ or ‘ ..."

), random number generation (RNG), operation span, and dual tasking. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the three target executive functions are moderately correlated with one another, but are clearly separable. Moreover, structural equation modeling suggested that the three functions
Primitives for the manipulation of general subdivisions and the computations of Voronoi diagrams
 ACM Tmns. Graph
, 1985
"... The following problem is discussed: Given n points in the plane (the sites) and an arbitrary query point 4, find the site that is closest to q. This problem can be solved by constructing the Voronoi diagram of the given sites and then locating the query point in one of its regions. Two algorithms ar ..."

are given, one that constructs the Voronoi diagram in O(n log n) time, and another that inserts a new site in O(n) time. Both are based on the use of the Voronoi dual, or Delaunay triangulation, and are simple enough to be of practical value. The simplicity of both algorithms can be attributed

behavior relations Greenwald et al. Predictive validity of the IAT (Draft of 30 Dec 2008) 2 Abstract (131 words) This review of 122 research reports (184 independent samples, 14,900 subjects), found average r=.274 for prediction of behavioral, judgment, and physiological measures by Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures. Parallel explicit (i.e., selfreport) measures, available in 156 of these samples (13,068 subjects), also predicted effectively (average r=.361), but with much greater variability of effect size. Predictive validity of selfreport was impaired for socially sensitive topics, for which impression management may distort selfreport responses. For 32 samples with criterion measures involving Black–White interracial behavior, predictive validity of IAT measures significantly exceeded that of selfreport measures. Both IAT and selfreport measures displayed incremental validity, with each measure predicting criterion variance beyond that predicted by the other. The more highly IAT and selfreport measures were intercorrelated, the greater was the predictive validity of each.
The English noun phrase in its sentential aspect
, 1987
"... This dissertation is a defense of the hypothesis that the noun phrase is headed by afunctional element (i.e., \nonlexical " category) D, identi ed with the determiner. In this way, the structure of the noun phrase parallels that of the sentence, which is headed by In (ection), under assump ..."

The selfduality equations on a Riemann surface
Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser
, 1987
"... In this paper we shall study a special class of solutions of the selfdual YangMills equations. The original selfduality equations which arose in mathematical physics were defined on Euclidean 4space. The physically relevant solutions were the ones with finite action—the socalled 'instanton ..."

Diversity and Multiplexing: A Fundamental Tradeoff in Multiple Antenna Channels
 IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory
, 2002
"... Multiple antennas can be used for increasing the amount of diversity or the number of degrees of freedom in wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose the point of view that both types of gains can be simultaneously obtained for a given multiple antenna channel, but there is a fund ..."

Understanding Normal and Impaired Word Reading: Computational Principles in QuasiRegular Domains
 PSYCHOLOGICAL REVIEW
, 1996
"... We develop a connectionist approach to processing in quasiregular domains, as exemplified by English word reading. A consideration of the shortcomings of a previous implementation (Seidenberg & McClelland, 1989, Psych. Rev.) in reading nonwords leads to the development of orthographic and phono ..."

In a number of simulation experiments, networks using the new representations learn to read both regular and exception words, including lowfrequency exception words, and yet are still able
