Self-determination and persistence in a real-life setting: Toward a motivational model of high school dropout.
- Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,
, 1997
"... The purpose of this study was to propose and test a motivational model of high school dropout. The model posits that teachers, parents, and the school administration's behaviors toward students influence students' perceptions of competence and autonomy. The less autonomy supportive the so ..."

Workers’ education, spillovers and productivity: evidence from plant- level production functions. American Economic Review 94
"... I assess the magnitude of human capital spillovers by estimating production functions using a unique firm-worker matched data set. Productivity of plants in cities that experience large increases in the share of college graduates rises more than the productivity of similar plants in cities that expe ..."

(JEL J30, L60, 040) Human capital externalities may arise if the presence of educated workers makes other workers more productive. Alfred Marshall (1890) is among the first to recognize that social interactions

In this poster we report on work in progress that attempts to parameterize star formation and energy feedback to the interstellar medium using simple models. We compare three different models for feedback, with each being motivated on different grounds. We study the performance of the algorithms on isolated disc galaxies as well as in hierarchical simulations. To ascertain the the limits of the parameter space we use a high star formation rate (SFR) normalization which leads to SFR's significantly higher than would be expected. Our preliminary results show that different models can yield drastically different results, ranging from having no effect to severe disruption of discs. Even with feedback, cosmological simulations form discs that show a sudden cut-off in density at comparatively small radii. However, interior to the cut-off the rotation curves for these discs are moderately plausible, but firm conclusions cannot be drawn due to the low resolution and numerically induced angular...
