Rethinking the pipeline as object–oriented states with transformations
- 9th International Workshop on High-Level Parallel Programming Models and Supportive Environments (HIPS’2004) at IPDPS
, 2004
"... The pipeline is a simple and intuitive structure to speed up many problems. Novice parallel programmers are usually taught this structure early on. However, expert parallel programmers typically eschew using the pipeline in coarse–grained applications because it has three serious problems that make ..."

/slave structure which does not suffer from these problems. This paper details a transformation that allows programs written in a pipeline style to execute using the master/slave structure. Parallel programmers can benefit from both the intuitive simplicity of the pipeline and the efficient execution of a master

A Metrics Suite for Object Oriented Design
- IEEE Trans. Softw. Eng
, 1994
"... Given the central role that software development plays in the delivery and application of information technology, managers are increasingly focusing on process improvement in the software development area. This demand has spurred the provision of a number of new and/or improved approaches to softwar ..."

to software development, with perhaps the most prominent being object-orientation (00). In addition, the focus on process improvement has increased the demand for software measures, or metrics with which to manage the process. The need for such metrics is particularly acute when an organization is adopting a
Software pipelining: An effective scheduling technique for VLIW machines
, 1988
"... This paper shows that software pipelining is an effective and viable scheduling technique for VLIW processors. In software pipelining, iterations of a loop in the source program are continuously initiated at constant intervals, before the preceding iterations complete. The advantage of software pipe ..."

pipelining is that optimal performance can be achieved with compact object code. This paper extends previous results of software pipelining in two ways: First, this paper shows that by using an im-proved algorithm, near-optimal performance can be obtained without specialized hardware. Second, we propose a

Volume rendering is a technique for visualizing 3D arrays of sampled data. It has applications in areas such as medical imaging and scientific visualization, but its use has been limited by its high computational expense. Early implementations of volume rendering used brute-force techniques that require on the order of 100 seconds to render typical data sets on a workstation. Algorithms with optimizations that exploit coherence in the data have reduced rendering times to the range of ten seconds but are still not fast enough for interactive visualization applications. In this thesis we present a family of volume rendering algorithms that reduces rendering times to one second. First we present a scanline-order volume rendering algorithm that exploits coherence in both the volume data and the image. We show that scanline-order algorithms are fundamentally more efficient than commonly-used ray casting algorithms because the latter must perform analytic geometry calculations (e.g. intersecting rays with axis-aligned boxes). The new scanline-order algorithm simply streams through the volume and the image in storage order. We describe variants of the algorithm for both parallel and perspective projections and
