Graphbased algorithms for Boolean function manipulation
 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON COMPUTERS
, 1986
"... In this paper we present a new data structure for representing Boolean functions and an associated set of manipulation algorithms. Functions are represented by directed, acyclic graphs in a manner similar to the representations introduced by Lee [1] and Akers [2], but with further restrictions on th ..."

Homological Algebra of Mirror Symmetry
in Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians
, 1994
"... Mirror Symmetry was discovered several years ago in string theory as a duality between families of 3dimensional CalabiYau manifolds (more precisely, complex algebraic manifolds possessing holomorphic volume elements without zeroes). The name comes from the symmetry among Hodge numbers. For dual Ca ..."

CalabiYau manifolds V, W of dimension n (not necessarily equal to 3) one has dim H p (V, Ω q) = dim H n−p (W, Ω q). Physicists conjectured that conformal field theories associated with mirror varieties are equivalent. Mathematically, MS is considered now as a relation between numbers of rational curves

Distributed computing systems are being built and used more and more frequently. This distributod computing revolution makes the reliability of distributed systems an important concern. It is fairly wellunderstood how to connect hardware so that most components can continue to work when others are broken, and thus increase the reliability of a system as a whole. This report addressos the issue of providing software for reliable distributed systems. In particular, we examine how to program a system so that the software continues to work in tho face of a variety of failures of parts of the system. The design presented

Orthogonal wavelet transforms have recently become a popular representation for multiscale signal and image analysis. One of the major drawbacks of these representations is their lack of translation invariance: the content of wavelet subbands is unstable under translations of the input signal. Wavelet transforms are also unstable with respect to dilations of the input signal, and in two dimensions, rotations of the input signal. We formalize these problems by defining a type of translation invariance that we call "shiftability". In the spatial domain, shiftability corresponds to a lack of aliasing; thus, the conditions under which the property holds are specified by the sampling theorem. Shiftability may also be considered in the context of other domains, particularly orientation and scale. We explore "jointly shiftable" transforms that are simultaneously shiftable in more than one domain. Two examples of jointly shiftable transforms are designed and implemented: a onedimensional tran...
Using Linear Algebra for Intelligent Information Retrieval
 SIAM REVIEW
, 1995
"... Currently, most approaches to retrieving textual materials from scientific databases depend on a lexical match between words in users' requests and those in or assigned to documents in a database. Because of the tremendous diversity in the words people use to describe the same document, lexical ..."

Using the singular value decomposition (SVD), one can take advantage of the implicit higherorder structure in the association of terms with documents by determining the SVD of large sparse term by document matrices.
