The task set for this Congress is to observe the patterns of our convergences and divergences and then, as is our introspective custom, also to explore and try to master those inner forces that interfere with growth. 1

Dedicated to the Lotus Feet of the revered Sadguru. This thesis presents a new active mask (AM) framework and an algorithm for segmenta-tion of digital images, particularly those of punctate patterns from fluorescence microscopy. Fluorescence microscopy has greatly facilitated the task of understanding complex sys-tems at cellular and molecular levels in recent years. Segmentation, an important yet dif-ficult problem, is often the first processing step following acquisition. Our team previously demonstrated that a stochastic active contour based algorithm together with the concept of

The maximal information coefficient (MIC) is a tool for finding the strongest pairwise relationships in a data set with many variables [1]. MIC is useful because it gives similar scores to equally noisy relationships of different types. This property, called equitability, is important for analyzing high-dimensional data sets. Here we formalize the theory behind both equitability and MIC in the language of estimation theory. This formalization has a number of advantages. First, it allows us to show that equitability is a generalization of power against statistical independence. Second, it allows us to compute and discuss the population value of MIC, which we call MIC∗. In doing so we generalize and strengthen the mathematical results proven in [1] and clarify the relationship between MIC and mutual information. Introducing MIC ∗ also enables us to reason about the properties of MIC more abstractly: for instance, we show that MIC∗ is continuous and that there is a sense in which it is a canonical “smoothing ” of mutual information. We also prove an alternate, equivalent characterization of MIC ∗ that we use to state new estimators of it as well as an algorithm for explicitly computing it when the joint probability density function of a pair of random variables is known. Our hope is that this paper provides a richer theoretical foundation for MIC and equitability going forward. This paper will be accompanied by a forthcoming companion paper that performs exten-sive empirical analysis and comparison to other methods and discusses the practical aspects of both equitability and the use of MIC and its related statistics. 1

Abstract: Online learning initia-tives over the past decade have become increasingly comprehen-sive in their selection of courses and sophisticated in their presen-tation, culminating in the recent announcement of a number of consortium and startup activities that promise to make a university education on the internet, free of charge, a real possibility. At this pivotal moment it is appropriate to explore the potential for obtaining comprehensive bioinformatics training with currently existing free video resources. This article pre-sents such a bioinformatics curric-ulum in the form of a virtual course catalog, together with editorial commentary, and an assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and likely future directions for open online learning in this field. Online Learning Comes of Age Online academic ‘‘courseware’ ’ at the university level has now been available to the public for a decade, the earliest concerted effort having originated in 2002 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their OpenCour-seWare initiative

[ A review of past and recent strategies for sub-Nyquist sampling] Signal processing methods have changed substantially over the last several decades. In modern applications, an increasing number of functions is being pushed forward to sophisticated software algorithms, leaving only delicate finely-tuned tasks for the circuit level. Sampling theory, the gate to the digital world, is the key enabling this revolution, encompassing all aspects related to the conversion of continuous-time signals to discrete streams of numbers. The famous Shannon-Nyquist theorem has become a landmark: a mathematical statement which has had one of the most profound impacts on industrial development of digital signal processing (DSP) systems. Over the years, theory and practice in the field of sampling have developed in parallel routes. Contributions by many research groups suggest a multitude of methods, other than uniform sampling, to acquire analog signals [1]–[6]. The math has deepened, leading to abstract signal spaces and innovative sampling techniques. Within generalized sampling theory, bandlimited signals have no special preference, other than historic. At the same time, the market adhered to the Nyquist paradigm; state-of-the-art analog to digital conversion (ADC) devices provide values of their input at equalispaced time points [7], [8]. The footprints of Shannon-Nyquist are evident
