This research investigates the potential contribution of the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze to design research. Through a comprehensive review of the literature an understanding of the themes of immanence and anti-essentialism in naturalism and environmental ethics was generated. Using interpretations of Deleuze’s philosophy with the sciences of complexity, I investigate the themes identified through the extension of the notion of self-organising material systems to the socio-technical realm of design research. Through the analysis of architecture and design discourses in the 1990’s an immanent field of design research is presented. The implications are drawn out through the investigation of a general ethico-aesthetic theory of design research through the comparison of problematic and axiomatic epistemology. The research concludes by presenting a better understanding of the relationship of issues of the environment and design as well as providing a conceptual framework that can enable productive dialogue between architectural and design discourses. ii Acknowledgements I would like to acknowledge Vladimir Mako, Sam Kebbell, and Maxe Fisher for their inspiration, patience, guidance, and encouragement which made this research project enjoyable and rewarding. I would like to thank my family for their support, and to my friends for making a difference. iii

Recent empirical studies of computing use in organizations and in public life are examined. The roles of computer technologies in the workplace, in decision making, in altering power relationships, and in influencing personal privacy are examined. In addition, studies that examine the social accountability of computing arrangements to broad publics are reviewed. All studies of computing in social ife make important assumptions about the social world in which computing is embedded. Two broad perspectives are contrasted. Systems rationalism, a collection of approaches including management science, managerial rationalism, and the systems approach, is found to be most helpful in stable settings, when there is considerable consensus over important social values. Segmented-institutionalist nalyses, which assume social conflict rather than consensus, are particularly powerful as the social world of computing use becomes more dynamic and as a wider variety of groups is involved.

service by reminding us that better nu-trition by itself is not sufficient to cure the problem of poverty in the United States. This is important since the tendency of many pem’sons in the struggle against pov-erty is to recommend unidimensional so-lutions. One faction proposes jobs as the main solution, another education, a third nutrition. Yet the truth is that no single modality is sufficient by itself, and any attempt to raise the status of the poor must be mounted on several fronts at the same Ii me. In the last few years nutritional defi-ciency has received major attention. Pol-lack correctly stresses the necessity of pro-vl(ling proper medical and dental care, employment, sanitation, housing, immuni-tations, public health methods, mobility, transportation, communication, and educa-tion. Yet in an attempt to bring all these factors into a more balanced perspective, he ititroduced an element of distortion, and that is his undue stress on “education.’’
