Lazy Narrowing: Strong Completeness and Eager Variable Elimination
- THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE
, 1995
"... Narrowing is an important method for solving unification problems in equational theories that are presented by confluent term rewriting systems. Because narrowing is a rather complicated operation, several authors studied calculi in which narrowing is replaced by more simple inference rules. Thi ..."

between its strong completeness and the completeness of basic narrowing. We also address the eager variable elimination problem. It is known that many redundant derivations can be avoided if the variable elimination rule, one of the inference rules of our calculus, is given precedence over the other
On Reducing the Search Space of Higher-Order Lazy Narrowing
, 1999
"... Higher-order lazy narrowing is a general method for solving E-unification problems in theories presented as sets of rewrite rules. In this paper we study the possibility to improve the search for normalized solutions of a higher-order lazy narrowing calculus LN. We introduce a new calculus, LNff, ob ..."

, obtained by extending LN and define an equation selection strategy Sn such that LNff with strategy Sn is complete. The main advantages of using LNff with strategy Sn instead of LN include the possibility to restrict the application of outermost narrowing at variable position, and the computation of more
Higher-Order Narrowing with Convergent Systems
- In 4th Int. Conf. Algebraic Methodology and Software Technology, AMAST '95. Springer LNCS 936
, 1995
"... . Higher-order narrowing is a general method for higher-order equational reasoning and serves for instance as the foundation for the integration of functional and logic programming. We present several refinements of higher-order lazy narrowing for convergent (terminating and confluent) term rewr ..."

rewrite systems and their application to program transformation. The improvements of narrowing include a restriction of narrowing at variables, generalizing the first-order case. Furthermore, functional evaluation via normalization is shown to be complete and a partial answer to the eager variable
A Rewriting Logic for Declarative Programming
, 1996
"... . We propose an approach to declarative programming which integrates the functional and relational paradigms by taking possibly non-deterministic lazy functions as the fundamental notion. Programs in our paradigm are theories in a constructor-based conditional rewriting logic. We present proof calcu ..."

Abstract: Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are two recently-developed technologies that uniquely function without xed infrastructure support, and sense at scales, resolutions, and durations previously not possible. While both offer great potential in many applications, developing software for these types of networks is extremely dffcult, preventing their wide-spread use. Three primary challenges are (1) the high level of dynamics within the network in terms of changing wireless links and node hardware con gurations, (2) the wide variety of hardware present in these networks, and (3) the extremely limited computational and energy resources available. Until now, the burden of handling these issues was put on the software application developer. This dissertation presents three novel programming models and middleware systems that address these challenges: Limone, Agilla, and Servilla. Limone reliably handles high levels of dynamics within MANETs. It does this through lightweight coordination primitives that make minimal assumptions about network connectivity. Agilla enables self-adaptive WSN applications via the integration of mobile agent and tuple space programming models, which is critical given the continuously changing network. It is the rst system to successfully demonstrate the feasibility of using mobile agents and tuple spaces within
The Impact of Violence Against Women in Advertisements
- The Journal of Advertising
, 2010
"... ABSTRACT Understanding the impact of portrayals of violence and abuse by advertising media, especially when directed at women, requires our going beyond concerns about effectiveness of such marketing communications. Previous research finds an unequivocal and harmful increased acceptance of cross-ge ..."
