Special Issue: Ecological and evolutionary informatics Ramping up biodiversity discovery via online quantum contributions

by David R. Maddison, Robert Guralnick, Andrew Hill, Anna-louise Reysenbach, Lucinda A. Mcdade
"... The pace of species discovery and documentation remains too slow on a human-altered planet in the midst of a massive extinction event. Increasing this pace requires altering conventional workflows. In this review, we propose that systematics needs to shift to a model of quantum contributions whereby ..."

Probabilistic Game Theoretic Algorithms for Group Recommender Systems

by George Popescu, Pearl Pu
"... Aggregating users ’ individual preference and recommending a common set of items for a group has become a challenging topic in group recommender systems and social websites. This issue is mainly concerned with the following three objectives: eliciting individual users ' preferences, suggesting ..."

Graph Query Reformulation with Diversity

by Davide Mottin, Francesco Bonchi, Francesco Gullo

Given a query issued by the user, the system, apart from returning the result pat-terns, also proposes a number of specializations (i.e., supergraphs) of the original query to facilitate ..."

An introduction to Caladenia R.Br. – Australasia’s jewel among terrestrial orchids

by Kingsley W. Dixona
"... Abstract. Caladenia is a genus of more than 250 species of geophytic orchids in the Tribe Diurideae endemic to the Australasian Region. The genus in this broad sense has an exceptional diversity of insect pollination adaptations among its colourfully adorned species, from food-rewarding generalists ..."

species number and complex biotic connections have resulted in no other genus of terrestrial orchids possessing such a large number of rare and threatened taxa. Some of this rich body of new data is presented by a diverse range of laboratories and researchers in this special issue.

Issue on on Object Object-Oriented Object Oriented Application Frameworks Frameworks, Frameworks

by Mohamed Fayad, Douglas C. Schmidt
"... Computing power and network bandwidth have increased dramatically over the past decade. However, the design and implementation of complex software remains expensive and error-prone. Much of the cost and effort stems from the continuous re-discovery and re-invention of core concepts and components ac ..."

In particular, the growing heterogeneity of hardware architectures and diversity of operating system and communication platforms makes it hard to build correct, portable, efficient, and inexpensive applications from scratch. A Loosely-coupled Semantic Model for Diverse and Comprehensive Cloud Service Search and Retrieval

by Daren Fang, Xiaodong Liu, Imed Romdhani
"... Abstract—As cloud services propagate along with the rapid development of cloud computing, issues raised in service selection and retrieval processes become increasingly critical. While many approaches are proposed on the specification and discovery of cloud services, existing service models and reco ..."

INTRODUCTION Analysis of molecular marker expression reveals neuronal homology in distantly related arthropods

by Molly Duman-Scheel , Nipam H Patel , 1999
"... Comparative analysis of arthropod CNS development will improve our understanding of the principles of neural development, the phylogeny of arthropods and the ways in which changes in development produce neuronal diversity. The first step in such a comparative analysis is to determine if different a ..."

Abstract: Online learning initia-tives over the past decade have become increasingly comprehen-sive in their selection of courses and sophisticated in their presen-tation, culminating in the recent announcement of a number of consortium and startup activities that promise to make a university education on the internet, free of charge, a real possibility. At this pivotal moment it is appropriate to explore the potential for obtaining comprehensive bioinformatics training with currently existing free video resources. This article pre-sents such a bioinformatics curric-ulum in the form of a virtual course catalog, together with editorial commentary, and an assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and likely future directions for open online learning in this field. Online Learning Comes of Age Online academic ‘‘courseware’ ’ at the university level has now been available to the public for a decade, the earliest concerted effort having originated in 2002 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their OpenCour-seWare initiative
