Shiftable Multiscale Transforms
, 1992
"... Orthogonal wavelet transforms have recently become a popular representation for multiscale signal and image analysis. One of the major drawbacks of these representations is their lack of translation invariance: the content of wavelet subbands is unstable under translations of the input signal. Wavel ..."

The Contourlet Transform: An Efficient Directional Multiresolution Image Representation
 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON IMAGE PROCESSING

Factoring wavelet transforms into lifting steps
 J. Fourier Anal. Appl
, 1998
"... ABSTRACT. This paper is essentially tutorial in nature. We show how any discrete wavelet transform or two band subband filtering with finite filters can be decomposed into a finite sequence of simple filtering steps, which we call lifting steps but that are also known as ladder structures. This dec ..."

in the biorthogonal, i.e, nonunitary case. Like the lattice factorization, the decomposition presented here asymptotically reduces the computational complexity of the transform by a factor two. It has other applications, such as the possibility of defining a waveletlike transform that maps integers to integers. 1.

Image registration methods: a survey
 IMAGE AND VISION COMPUTING
, 2003
"... This paper aims to present a review of recent as well as classic image registration methods. Image registration is the process of overlaying images (two or more) of the same scene taken at different times, from different viewpoints, and/or by different sensors. The registration geometrically align t ..."

two images (the reference and sensed images). The reviewed approaches are classified according to their nature (areabased and featurebased) and according to four basic steps of image registration procedure: feature detection, feature matching, mapping function design, and image transformation
Representing Moving Images with Layers
, 1994
"... We describe a system for representing moving images with sets of overlapping layers. Each layer contains an intensity map that defines the additive values of each pixel, along with an alpha map that serves as a mask indicating the transparency. The layers are ordered in depth and they occlude each o ..."

The layered representation is more flexible than standard image transforms and can capture many important properties of natural image sequences. We describe some methods for decomposing image

"... Abstract. We discuss a multilinear generalization of the singular value decomposition. There is a strong analogy between several properties of the matrix and the higherorder tensor decomposition; uniqueness, link with the matrix eigenvalue decomposition, firstorder perturbation effects, etc., are ..."

We propose a new method for estimation in linear models. The "lasso" minimizes the residual sum of squares subject to the sum of the absolute value of the coefficients being less than a constant. Because of the nature of this constraint it tends to produce some coefficients that are exactly zero and hence gives interpretable models. Our simulation studies suggest that the lasso enjoys some of the favourable properties of both subset selection and ridge regression. It produces interpretable models like subset selection and exhibits the stability of ridge regression. There is also an interesting relationship with recent work in adaptive function estimation by Donoho and Johnstone. The lasso idea is quite general and can be applied in a variety of statistical models: extensions to generalized regression models and treebased models are briefly described. Keywords: regression, subset selection, shrinkage, quadratic programming. 1 Introduction Consider the usual regression situation: we h...
