DEEP: Dualspace Expansion for Estimating Penetration depth between convex polytopes
In IEEE Conference on Robotics and Automation
, 2002
"... We present an incremental algorithm to estimate the penetration depth between convex polytopes in 3D. The algorithm incrementally seeks a "locally optimal solution" by walking on the surface of the Minkowski sums. The surface of the Minkowski sums is computed implicitly by constructing a l ..."

Convex Analysis
, 1970
"... In this book we aim to present, in a unified framework, a broad spectrum of mathematical theory that has grown in connection with the study of problems of optimization, equilibrium, control, and stability of linear and nonlinear systems. The title Variational Analysis reflects this breadth. For a lo ..."

long time, ‘variational ’ problems have been identified mostly with the ‘calculus of variations’. In that venerable subject, built around the minimization of integral functionals, constraints were relatively simple and much of the focus was on infinitedimensional function spaces. A major theme
Just Relax: Convex Programming Methods for Identifying Sparse Signals in Noise
, 2006
"... This paper studies a difficult and fundamental problem that arises throughout electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and statistics. Suppose that one forms a short linear combination of elementary signals drawn from a large, fixed collection. Given an observation of the linear combination that ..."

that convex relaxation succeeds. As evidence of the broad impact of these results, the paper describes how convex relaxation can be used for several concrete signal recovery problems. It also describes applications to channel coding, linear regression, and numerical analysis.
Approximate Signal Processing

Graphical models, exponential families, and variational inference
, 2008
"... The formalism of probabilistic graphical models provides a unifying framework for capturing complex dependencies among random variables, and building largescale multivariate statistical models. Graphical models have become a focus of research in many statistical, computational and mathematical fiel ..."

Working with exponential family representations, and exploiting the conjugate duality between the cumulant function and the entropy for exponential families, we develop general variational representations of the problems of computing
Planning Algorithms

Multipoint quantitativetrait linkage analysis in general pedigrees
 Am. J. Hum. Genet
, 1998
"... Multipoint linkage analysis of quantitativetrait loci (QTLs) has previously been restricted to sibships and small pedigrees. In this article, we show how variancecomponent linkage methods can be used in pedigrees of arbitrary size and complexity, and we develop a general framework for multipoint i ..."

 In Proceedings of SIGGRAPH 96
, 1996

This paper discusses a new method for capturing the complete appearanceof both synthetic and real world objects and scenes, representing this information, and then using this representation to render images of the object from new camera positions. We study the semidefinite programming problem (SDP), i.e the problem of optimization of a linear function of a symmetric matrix subject to linear equality constraints and the additional condition that the matrix be positive semidefinite. First we review the classical cone duality as specialized to SDP. Next we present an interior point algorithm which converges to the optimal solution in polynomial time. The approach is a direct extension of Ye's projective method for linear programming. We also argue that most known interior point methods for linear programs can be transformed in a mechanical way to algorithms for SDP with proofs of convergence and polynomial time complexity also carrying over in a similar fashion. Finally we study the significance of these results in a variety of combinatorial optimization problems including the general 01 integer programs, the maximum clique and maximum stable set problems in perfect graphs, the maximum k partite subgraph problem in graphs, and va...
