IDF revisited: a simple new derivation within the Robertson-Spärck Jones probabilistic model

by Lillian Lee - In Proc. 30th Ann. Intl. ACM SIGIR Conf. on Research and Development in Information Retrieval , 2007
"... There have been a number of prior attempts to theoretically justify the effectiveness of the inverse document frequency (IDF). Those that take as their starting point Robertson and Spärck Jones’s probabilistic model are based on strong or complex assumptions. We show that a more intuitively plausibl ..."

COSMOLOGICAL MODELS OF MODIFIED GRAVITY

by Jolyon Keith Bloomfield, Ph. D , 2013
"... The recent discovery of dark energy has prompted an investigation of ways in which the accelerated expansion of the universe can be realized. In this dissertation, we present two separate projects related to dark energy. The first project analyzes a class of braneworld models in which multiple brane ..."

This method is applied to orbifolded and uncompactified N-brane models, deriving an effective four-dimensional action. The parameter space of this theory is constrained using observational

Abstract Cosmological Black Holes as Models of Cosmological Inhomogeneities

by Megan L. Mcclure, Megan L. Mcclure , 2006
"... Since cosmological black holes modify the density and pressure of the surrounding universe, and introduce heat conduction, they produce simple models of cosmologi-cal inhomogeneities that can be used to study the eect of inhomogeneities on the universe's expansion. Abstract. Semantic sensor networks use declarative descriptions of sen-sors promote reuse and integration, and to help solve the difficulties of installing, querying and maintaining complex, heterogeneous sensor net-works. This paper reviews the state of the art for the semantic specifi-cation of sensors, one of the fundamental technologies in the semantic sensor network vision. Twelve sensor ontologies are reviewed and anal-ysed for the range and expressive power of their concepts. The reasoning and search technology developed in conjunction with these ontologies is also reviewed, as is technology for annotating OGC standards with links to ontologies. Sensor concepts that cannot be expressed accurately by current sensor ontologies are also discussed. 1
