C: Nocturnal exposure to intermittent 60 Hz magnetic fields alters human cardiac rhythm. Bioelectromagnetics

by Antonio Sastre , Mary R Cook , Charles Graham , 1998
"... Heart rate variability (HRV) results from the action of neuronal and cardiovascular reflexes, including those involved in the control of temperature, blood pressure and respiration. Quantitative spectral analyses of alterations in HRV using the digital Fourier transform technique provide useful in ..."

continu-rate time series again revealed a statistically significant reduction in the power of the low-frequency band ous field exposure (Field by Hour interaction F Å 0.71; df Å 5,120; P Å 0.61). Again in contrast to our previous (0.0 -0.1 Hz) in subjects exposed to 200 mG intermittent magnetic fields

It has now become possible to image the functioning of the human brain in real time using functional MRI (fMRI), and thereby to access both sides of the mind-brain interface -subjective exper ..."

. This means that blood itself serves as a contrast agent, making the MRI signal sensitive to brain activation. Changes in activation can therefore be inferred from the voxels' changes in brightness at each time point. The fMRI procedure is thought to be quite safe, uses the subject's blood itself

This report focuses on the evidence about the health.consequences of smoking for women, and is intended to serve.the public health and medical communities as 'a unified source of existing scientific research. The major issues about tobacco use and women's health are examined, including trends in consumption, biomedical evidence, and determinants of smoking ititiation, maintenance, and cessation. The biomedical aspects ofsmoking are presented in terms of mortality, morbiplity, cardiovasculaidiseases, cancer, pregnancy and infant, health,, Teptic ulcer disease, drug reactions and, interactions, food constituents, and responses to,diagnostic tests. The psychosocial and behavioraj. aspects, of smoking in women are discussed, along with the docffiented increases in- the risk of contracting lung cancer, heart, disease, or lung disease. The harmful effects of pregnant mothers smoking behaviors, are also docudented. Adhitionally, recent data are enumerated to indicate a trend of,decreasing tobacco usage among women in response to the warnings of the gavernMent, voluntary agencie, and physicrins. Examining the Relationship Between Degree of Handedness and Degree of Cerebral Lateralization for Processing Facial Emotion

by Victoria J Bourne , Victoria J Bourne , 2008
"... This paper examines the relationship between degree of handedness and degree of cerebral lateralization on a task of processing positive facial emotion in right-handed individuals. Three hundred and thirteen right-handed participants (157 women) were given two behavioral tests of lateralization: a ..."

Diminished neural responses predict enhanced intrinsic motivation and sensitivity to external incentive

by Karen E Marsden , Wei Ji Ma , Edward L Deci , Richard M Ryan , Pearl H Chiu
"... Abstract The duration and quality of human performance depend on both intrinsic motivation and external incentives. However, little is known about the neuroscientific basis of this interplay between internal and external motivators. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the ..."

Using this paradigm and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we report a network of brain regions in which diminished task-related activity predicted

Behind the scenes of auditory perception This review comes from a themed issue on Sensory systems Edited

by Shihab A Shamma , Christophe Micheyl , Kevan Martin , Kristin Scott , 2010
"... 'Auditory scenes' often contain contributions from multiple acoustic sources. These are usually heard as separate auditory 'streams', which can be selectively followed over time. How and where these auditory streams are formed in the auditory system is one of the most fascinatin ..."

In particular, one study found significantly greater activation
