View from the Chair My other hobby is a PC This column is arriving with Laura later than intended, and the reason boils down to layers of tension between computers and home life, several of which involved drivers for USB 2.0 devices but were exacerbated by the stress of constant exposure to low-level noise. Ten years ago a colleague observed that the sheer volume of a home PC would be too disruptive to domestic harmony. Things haven’t changed. I specifically sought quiet components for my current PC yet still the sound obtrudes and it’s plainly not fit for purpose. All of which brings me to the conference theme for Bath this September. One tack to consider as we Design for Society is to what extent are we successful in integrating IT with our real activities, or are we still in the era of “my other hobby is

Background and Motivation Ubicomp research continually develops novel interaction techniques, sensing technologies, and new ways of presenting personalized information to the user. Gradually, companies operating in environments such as airports, museums or even shopping malls are becoming aware of the potential benefits in letting such technologies assist their users and customers. Intelligent environments are predicted to aid their users in pursuing their activities, such as wayfinding or shopping, through the situated presentation of personalized information. However, due to the large design space that ranges
Oval Intersections in Tilings on Surfaces
, 1998
"... A tiling is a covering by polygons, without gaps or overlapping, of a compact, orientable surface. We are particularly interested in tilings by triangles that generate a large symmetry group of the surface. An oval of the tiling is a simple, closed curve that is a union of edges of the tiling. We in ..."

investigate the number of points of intersection of two ovals. We have found that the number of intersections is bounded when the subgroup of orientation preserving symmetries is abelian. However, there is no upper bound on the number of intersections in the non-abelian case. 1 Introduction Let S be a

This symposium offers a stimulating forum among academic researchers, local, state and federal law enforcement, intelligence experts and information security workers who are interested in assessing credibility and deception detection. New tools, technologies, processes and procedures will be discussed and debated concerning the efficiency, effectiveness and usefulness for aiding in credibility assessment and deception detection. Screening individuals at ports of entry, check points, transportation hubs, etc. is a challenging and sometimes daunting task. Screeners face the difficult task of identifying the few individuals who may pose a security threat from the numerous individuals who pose no threat, all the while maintaining consistent and efficient flow of traffic. Assessing the credibility of information is critical in many venues (e.g., law enforcement scenarios, fraud investigations, identification of corruption, intelligence gathering, etc.). Novel research involving new methods or insight into credibility assessment, application of deception detection technologies, and establishing information quality and ground truth is appropriate for this symposium.
More than dotting the i's - Foundations for crossing-based interfaces
, 2002
"... Today's graphical interactive systems largely depend upon pointing actions, i.e. entering an object and selecting it. In this paper we explore whether an alternate paradigm-- crossing boundaries -- may substitute or complement pointing as another fundamental interaction method. We describe an e ..."

Even if sometimes, while studying, writing or thinking one can be feel alone doctoral studies are not a lonely journey. They are a path made of people, of guides able to inspire, of obstacles, of successes and defeats, and of knowledge and experience. And in this journey there are many people that I have to thank for their help and for the inspiration that they gave to me. First of all I would like to thank my supervisors, prof. Fabio Roli and prof. Gian Luca Marcialis for their guidance, and advices throughout the Ph.D. A special thank goes to prof. Carlo Maria Medaglia for his encouragement and for the great time working together inside the CATTID laboratories in Rome. It would have been impossible to arrive until this point without the love and the support of my family and my friends. Finally a thank goes to all the people that in different ways have contributed to this journey. vii Ambient Intelligence is new multidisciplinary paradigm that is going to change the relation between humans, technology and the environment they live in. This paradigm has its roots in the ideas Ubiquitous and Pervasive computing. In this vision, that nowadays is almost reality, technology
