This dissertation addresses mathematical issues regarding weakly compressible approximations of gas dynamics that arise both in fluid dynamical and in kinetic settings. These approximations are derived in regimes in which (1) transport coeffi-cients (viscosity and thermal conductivity) are small and (2) the gas is near an abso-lute equilibrium — a spatially uniform, stationary state. When we consider regimes in which both the transport scales and Re vanish, we derive the weakly compressible Stokes approximation — a linear system. When we consider regimes in which the transport scales vanish while Re maintains order unity, we derive the weakly com-pressible Navier-Stokes approximation—a quadratic system. Each of these weakly compressible approximations govern both the acoustic and the incompressible modes of the gas. In the fluid dynamical setting, our derivations begin with the fully compress-ible Navier-Stokes system. We show that the structure of the weakly compressible Navier-Stokes system ensures that it has global weak solutions, thereby extending the Leray theory for the incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Indeed, we show that

Compressed sensing has shown to be promising to accelerate magnetic resonance imag-ing. In this new technology, magnetic resonance images are usually reconstructed by en-forcing its sparsity in sparse image reconstruction models, including both synthesis and analysis models. The synthesis model assumes that an image is a sparse combination of atom signals while the analysis model assumes that an image is sparse after the application of an analysis operator. Balanced model is a new sparse model that bridges analysis and synthesis models by introducing a penalty term on the distance of frame coefficients to the range of the analysis operator. In this paper, we study the performance of the balanced model in tight frame based compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging and propose a new efficient numerical algorithm to solve the optimization problem. By tuning the balanc-ing parameter, the new model achieves solutions of three models. It is found that the bal-anced model has a comparable performance with the analysis model. Besides, both of them achieve better results than the synthesis model no matter what value the balancing parameter is. Experiment shows that our proposed numerical algorithm constrained split augmented Lagrangian shrinkage algorithm for balanced model (C-SALSA-B) converges faster than previously proposed algorithms accelerated proximal algorithm (APG) and alter-nating directional method of multipliers for balanced model (ADMM-B).

Abstract: The presence of tail dependencies invalidates the multivariate normality assumptions in portfolio risk management. The identification of tail (in)dependencies has drawn major attention in empirical financial studies. Yet it is still a challenging issue both theoretically and practically. Previous studies based on either a restrictive model or the null hypothesis of tail (perfect) dependence does not well describe or interpret extreme co-movements in financial markets. This paper examines tail dependence structures underlying a broad range of financial asset classes employing the newly developed tail quotient correlation coefficients. In theory, the original tail quotient correlation coefficient proposed in (Zhang 2008) is adapted to incorporate cases with varying data driven random thresholds. Our empirical results demonstrate different tail dependence structures underlying various global financial markets. Either omission or unanimous treatment of the tail dependence structures for different financial markets will lead to erroneous conclusions or suboptimal investment choices. The multivariate extreme value theory framework in this study has the potential to serve as an useful tool in exploiting arbitrage opportunities, optimizing asset allocations, and building robust risk management strategies.
