Global Optimization with Polynomials and the Problem of Moments
 SIAM Journal on Optimization
, 2001
"... We consider the problem of finding the unconstrained global minimum of a realvalued polynomial p(x) : R R, as well as the global minimum of p(x), in a compact set K defined by polynomial inequalities. It is shown that this problem reduces to solving an (often finite) sequence of convex linear mat ..."

Particle swarm optimization
, 1995
"... eberhart @ engr.iupui.edu A concept for the optimization of nonlinear functions using particle swarm methodology is introduced. The evolution of several paradigms is outlined, and an implementation of one of the paradigms is discussed. Benchmark testing of the paradigm is described, and applications ..."

Shallow Parsing with Conditional Random Fields
, 2003
"... Conditional random fields for sequence labeling offer advantages over both generative models like HMMs and classifiers applied at each sequence position. Among sequence labeling tasks in language processing, shallow parsing has received much attention, with the development of standard evaluati ..."

Directed Diffusion for Wireless Sensor Networking
 IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking
, 2003
"... Advances in processor, memory and radio technology will enable small and cheap nodes capable of sensing, communication and computation. Networks of such nodes can coordinate to perform distributed sensing of environmental phenomena. In this paper, we explore the directed diffusion paradigm for such ..."

Genetic Algorithms for Multiobjective Optimization: Formulation, Discussion and Generalization
, 1993
"... The paper describes a rankbased fitness assignment method for Multiple Objective Genetic Algorithms (MOGAs). Conventional niche formation methods are extended to this class of multimodal problems and theory for setting the niche size is presented. The fitness assignment method is then modified to a ..."

to allow direct intervention of an external decision maker (DM). Finally, the MOGA is generalised further: the genetic algorithm is seen as the optimizing element of a multiobjective optimization loop, which also comprises the DM. It is the interaction between the two that leads to the determination of a
Directional Statistics and Shape Analysis
, 1995
"... There have been various developments in shape analysis in the last decade. We describe here some relationships of shape analysis with directional statistics. For shape, rotations are to be integrated out or to be optimized over whilst they are the basis for directional statistics. However, various c ..."

Goaldirected Requirements Acquisition
 SCIENCE OF COMPUTER PROGRAMMING
, 1993

Markov Random Field Models in Computer Vision
, 1994
"... . A variety of computer vision problems can be optimally posed as Bayesian labeling in which the solution of a problem is defined as the maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability estimate of the true labeling. The posterior probability is usually derived from a prior model and a likelihood model. The l ..."

Intrinsic and extrinsic types of motivation have been widely studied, and the distinction between them has shed important light on both developmental and educational practices. In this review we revisit the classic definitions of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in light of contemporary research and theory. Intrinsic motivation remains an important construct, reflecting the natural human propensity to learn and assimilate. However, extrinsic motivation is argued to vary considerably in its relative autonomy and thus can either reflect external control or true selfregulation. The relations of both classes of motives to basic human needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness are discussed. © 2000 Academic Press To be motivated means to be moved to do something. A person who feels no impetus or inspiration to act is thus characterized as unmotivated, whereas someone who is energized or activated toward an end is considered motivated. Most everyone who works or plays with others is, accordingly, concerned with motivation, facing the question of how much motivation those others, or oneself, has for a task, and practitioners of all types face the perennial
Virtual Time and Global States of Distributed Systems
 PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED ALGORITHMS
