Evolving Interesting Maps for a First Person Shooter

by Luigi Cardamone, Georgios N. Yannakakis, Julian Togelius, Pier Luca Lanzi - in Proceedings of EvoGames: Applications of Evolutionary Computation, ser. Lecture
"... Abstract. We address the problem of automatically designing maps for first-person shooter (FPS) games. An efficient solution to this procedural content generation (PCG) problem could allow the design of FPS games of lower development cost with near-infinite replay value and capability to adapt to th ..."

Multi-Level Evolution of Shooter Levels

by William Cachia, Antonios Liapis, Georgios N. Yannakakis
"... This paper introduces a search-based generative pro-cess for first person shooter levels. Genetic algorithms evolve the level’s architecture and the placement of powerups and player spawnpoints, generating levels with one floor or two floors. The evaluation of gen-erated levels combines metrics coll ..."

Robust recognition of physical team behaviors using spatio-temporal models

by Gita Sukthankar, Katia Sycara - In Proceedings of International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems , 2006
"... This paper presents a framework for robustly recognizing physical team behaviors by exploiting spatio-temporal patterns. Agent team behaviors in athletic and military domains typically exhibit an observable structure characterized by the relative positions of teammates and external landmarks, such a ..."

evolving agent team configurations over time. These two classes of models can be combined to improve recognition accuracy, particularly for behaviors that appear similar in static snapshots. We evaluate our modeling techniques on large urban maps and position traces of two-person human teams performing

Visual word recognition in bilinguals: Phonological priming from the second to the first language.

by Ilse Van Wijnendaele , Marc Brysbaert - Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, , 2002
"... In this study, the authors show that cross-lingual phonological priming is possible not only from the 1st language (L1) to the 2nd language (L2), but also from L2 to L1. In addition, both priming effects were found to have the same magnitude and to not be related to differences in word naming laten ..."

on bilingualism, researchers were mainly interested in so-called balanced bilinguals. These are persons who master two languages to the same degree and who can use both languages in virtually every situation. Usually, they are individuals who have been raised bilingually from their birth (e.g., because

As this master thesis marks the end of my studies at Delft University of Technology, I would like to use this opportunity and thank everyone who has influenced my two-year journey. Those last two years have not been easy. In fact, it has been the most challenging, stressful, and at the same time- the most inspiring, productive, and exciting journey. Journey, which has completely changed my life and has prepared me for new challenges and opportunities. I owe a very special debt to the ex president of Georgia – Mikheil Saakashvili, for initiating a scholarship program for Georgian students abroad, willing to pursue master’s degree. I would like to thank Mr. Saakashvili for giving me a chance to be one of those students, and for fully sponsoring my studies at TU Delft. I must express special gratitude to my graduation committee for being way more supportive then I could ever imagine. I would like to thank them for all their feedback, support, and encouragement, for being very understanding, and shortly, for making it possible for me to finalize my thesis and to graduate. I would like to acknowledge the selfless help and support of my supervisor – Dr. Huib Aldewereld. His guidance and support encouraged me to be motivated and to keep working on the thesis. I would like to thank him for all his time that he has spent on reading my thesis, on giving me direct comments, and further motivation. I had times when I felt lost in my own thesis, and I was ready to give up, but Dr. Aldewereld always managed to encourage and motivate me. I would like to thank him for arranging meetings (lots of meetings) with me to discuss my progress, whenever I asked for it, despite his very

In this thesis the original game was improved, especially the gameplay and the produced network load, but also graphics were reworked. The gameplay

Stacked Calibration of Off-Policy Policy Evaluation for Video Game Matchmaking

by Eric Laufer, Raul Ch, Ias Ferrari, Li Yao, Olivier Delalleau, Yoshua Bengio
"... Abstract—We consider an industrial strength application of recommendation systems for video-game matchmaking in which off-policy policy evaluation is important but where standard approaches can hardly be applied. The objective of the policy is to sequentially form teams of players from those waiting ..."

by Rodrigo Vicencio-moriera, Regan L. M, Carl Gutwin, Scott Bateman, Ca P
"... Aim-assistance techniques have been shown to work for player balancing in 2D environments, but little information exists about how well these techniques will work in a 3D FPS game. We carried out three studies of the performance of five different aim assists in an Unreal-based game world. The assist ..."

22.10.2009 Implementation of a Peer-to-Peer Multiplayer Game with Realtime Requirements

by Gutachten Alej, Ro Buchmann
"... Massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have become increasingly popular in the recent years, particularly in the form of online role-playing games (MMORPGs). These games support up to several ten thousand players interacting in a virtual game world. The current commercially successful games are ..."
