Many machine learning technologies such as support vector machines, boosting, and neural networks have been applied to the ranking problem in information retrieval. However, since originally the methods were not developed for this task, their loss functions do not directly link to the criteria used in the evaluation of ranking. Specifically, the loss functions are defined on the level of documents or document pairs, in contrast to the fact that the evaluation criteria are defined on the level of queries. Therefore, minimizing the loss functions does not necessarily imply enhancing ranking performances. To solve this problem, we propose using querylevel loss functions in learning of ranking functions. We discuss the basic properties that a querylevel loss function should have and propose a querylevel loss function based on the cosine similarity between a ranking list and the corresponding ground truth. We further design a coordinate descent algorithm, referred to as RankCosine, which utilizes the proposed loss function to create a generalized additive ranking model. We also discuss whether the loss functions of existing ranking algorithms can be extended to querylevel. Experimental results on the datasets of TREC web track, OHSUMED, and a commercial web search engine show that with the use of the proposed querylevel loss function we can significantly improve ranking accuracies. Furthermore, we found that it is difficult to extend the documentlevel loss functions to querylevel loss functions.

Alarm correlation plays an important role in improving the service and reliability in modern telecommunication networks. Most previous research of alarm correlation didn’t consider the effects of noise data in the database. This paper focuses on the method of discovering alarm correlation rules from the database containing noise data. We firstly define two parameters Win_freq and Win_add as the measures of noise data and then present the Robust_search algorithm to solve the problem. At different size of Win_freq and Win_add, the experiments on alarm database containing noise data show that the Robust_search Algorithm can discover more rules with the bigger size of Win_add. We also compare two different interestingness measures of confidence and correlation by experiments.

We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the AtiyahSinger index theorem, the AtiyahBottSegalSinger Lefschetz fixed point formula, KacMoody Lie algebras, modular forms and thetafunctions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the AtiyahSinger index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the KacWeyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. In this article, we consider a singlephase coupled nonlinear Stefan problem of the waterhead and concentration equations with nonlinear source and permeance terms and a Dirichlet boundary condition depending on the freeboundary function. The problem is very important in subsurface contaminant transport and remediation, seawater intrusion and control, and many other applications. While a Landau type transformation is introduced to immobilize the free boundary, a transformation for the waterhead and concentration functions is defined to deal with the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, which depends on the free boundary function. An H 1finite element method for the problem is then proposed and analyzed. The existence of the approximation solution is established, and error estimates are obtained for both the semidiscrete schemes and the fully discrete schemes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract—In this paper, we propose to transmit convolutiorudly coded DS waveforms over orthogonally overlapped subchannets in time tisnited asynchronous channels. The bit error rate of the decoder output is investigated along with sirmdation ressdtsunder several conditions on the CSL It is shown that the proposed system, the convolutionatly coded orthogonal multicarrier DS/CDMA system, signlticantly outperforms the system asing frequency diversity combining. It is utso shown that the proposed system has better performance than the convolutionatly coded abnost nonoverlapped multicarrier DS/CDMA system under the condition that the information rate and total available bandwidth are the same for both systems. 1.
