Embodied Artificial Intelligence On the role of morphology and materials in the emergence of cognition*
"... In the cognitivistic paradigm, intelligence was viewed as algorithmic, an approach that has lead to many impressive results and applications. However, this view turned out to be too limited: If we are to understand natural forms of intelligence, embodiment must be taken into account. In this paper w ..."

we explore the implications of embodiment by providing a number of case studies. One concept that we will investigate is “ecological balance”, i.e. the interplay of morphology, materials, and neural processing. We develop a method of how this can be systematically investigated using artificial
Dynamics, Morphology, and Materials in The Emergence of Cognition
- Proc. KI-99
, 1999
"... . Early approaches to understanding intelligence have assumed that intelligence can be studied at the level of algorithms which is why for many years the major tool of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers has been the computer (this has become known as classical AI). As researchers started to bu ..."

" became the new buzzword. In the meantime there has been a lot of research employing robots for the study of intelligence. However, embodiment has not been taken really seriously. Hardly any studies deal with morphology (i.e. shape), material properties, and their relation to sensory- motor processing
Minireview An Embodied View of Octopus Neurobiology
"... Octopuses have a unique flexible body and unusual morphology, but nevertheless they are undoubtedly a great evolutionary success. They compete successfully with vertebrates in their ecological niche using a rich behavioral repertoire more typical of an intelligent predator which includes extremely ..."

I will review experimental results suggesting that these difficulties, arising from the animal's morphology, have imposed the evolution of unique brain/body/behavior relationships best explained as intelligent behavior which emerges from the octopus's embodied organization. The term 'intelligent

Abstract: Online learning initia-tives over the past decade have become increasingly comprehen-sive in their selection of courses and sophisticated in their presen-tation, culminating in the recent announcement of a number of consortium and startup activities that promise to make a university education on the internet, free of charge, a real possibility. At this pivotal moment it is appropriate to explore the potential for obtaining comprehensive bioinformatics training with currently existing free video resources. This article pre-sents such a bioinformatics curric-ulum in the form of a virtual course catalog, together with editorial commentary, and an assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and likely future directions for open online learning in this field. Online Learning Comes of Age Online academic ‘‘courseware’ ’ at the university level has now been available to the public for a decade, the earliest concerted effort having originated in 2002 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their OpenCour-seWare initiative
Multiliteracies HER Vol 66 1996
, 1996
"... Abstract In this article, the New London Group presents a theoretical overview of the connections between the changing social environment facing students and teachers and a new approach to literacy pedagogy that they call "multiliteracies." The authors argue that the multiplicity of commu ..."

could say that its fundamental purpose is to ensure that all students benefit from learning in ways that allow them to participate fully in public, community, and economic life. Literacy pedagogy is expected to play a particularly important role in fulfilling this mission. Pedagogy is a teaching
