Matrix Backpropagation for Deep Networks with Structured Layers
- IN IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION
, 2015
"... Deep neural network architectures have recently produced excellent results in a variety of areas in artificial intelligence and visual recognition, well surpassing traditional shallow architectures trained using hand-designed features. The power of deep networks stems both from their ability to perf ..."

Deep and wide multiscale recursive networks for robust image labeling
- In International Conference on Learning Representations
, 2014
"... Feedforward multilayer networks trained by supervised learning have recently demonstrated state of the art performance on image labeling problems such as boundary prediction and scene parsing. As even very low error rates can limit practical usage of such systems, methods that perform closer to huma ..."

Experiments in the challenging domain of connectomic reconstruction of neural circuity from 3d electron microscopy data show that these “Deep And Wide Multiscale Recursive” (DAWMR) networks lead to new levels of image labeling performance. The highest performing architecture

A Signal-Level Fusion Model for Image-Based Change Detection in DARPA's Dynamic Database System
"... Improving change detection performance (probability of detection/false alarm rate) is an important goal of DARPA's Dynamic Database (DDB) program. We describe a novel approach based on fusing the outputs from two complementary image-based change detection algorithms. Both use historical imagery ..."

ii iv vTo my parents vi vii Acknowledgements I would first and foremost extend my whole-hearted gratitude to my advisors, An-drea Arpaci-Dusseau and Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau. Andrea and Remzi are the reason that I had the opportunity for this exceptional Ph.D. journey. To this day, I still re-member the moment when they took me as their student and the joy and hope in my heart. Andrea and Remzi have showed me what systems research is like and how much fun and challenging it can be. Before this journey with them, I had always liked and believed in the beauty of mathematics and theory. My initial interest in systems research happened when I took Remzi’s Advanced Operating Systems
ON MAXIMALLY INFLECTED HYPERBOLIC CURVES
"... Abstract. In this note we study the distribution of real inflection points among the ovals of a real non-singular hyperbolic curve of even degree. Using Hilbert’s method we show that for any integers d and r such that 4 ≤ r ≤ 2d2 − 2d, there is a non-singular hyperbolic curve of degree 2d in R2 with ..."
