Autopoietic theory is the term I use to denote the work of Chilean biologists Humberto R. Maturana and Francisco J. Varela (originally labeled the biology of cognition). Background: Biology of Cognition / Autopoietic Theory This initial section is designed to orient you in preparation for the remainder of the Tutorial. • It will present some of the key observations and issues which led to the creation of the biology of cognition / autopoietic theory. • These in turn describe some important aspects of the perspective from which this work has proceeded. • This section ends with a very brief description of the theory's merits and the fields within which it has been applied to date. • You can then proceed to an introduction to the theory itself.
