We describe the architecture of a relational database system that is extensible by user-defined data types and operations, including relation operations. The central concept is to use languages based on many-sorted algebra to represent queries as well as query execution plans. This leads to a simple and clean extensible system architecture, eases the task of an application developer by providing a uniform framework, and also simplifies rule-based optimization. As a case study the extensions needed for a geometric database system are considered.

mesh generation, mesh coarsening, multigrid Abstract A numerical method for the solution of a partial differential equation (PDE) requires the following steps: (1) discretizing the domain (mesh generation); (2) using an approximation method and the mesh to transform the problem into a linear system; (3) solving the linear system. The approximation error and convergence of the numerical method depend on the geometric quality of the mesh, which in turn depends on the size and shape of its elements. For example, the shape quality of a triangular mesh is measured by its element's aspect ratio. In this work, we shift the focus to the geometric properties of the nodes, rather than the elements, of well shaped meshes. We introduce the concept of well-spaced points and their spacing functions, and show that these enable the development of simple and efficient algorithms for the different stages of the numerical solution of PDEs. We first apply well-spaced point sets and their accompanying technology to mesh coarsening, a crucial step in the multigrid solution of a PDE. A good aspect-ratio coarsening sequence of an unstructured mesh M0 is a sequence of good aspect-ratio meshes M1; : : : ; Mk such that Mi is an approximation of Mi\Gamma 1 containing fewer nodes and elements. We present a new approach to coarsening that guarantees the sequence is also of optimal size and width up to a constant factor-- the first coarsening method that provides these guarantees. We also present experimental results, based on an implementation of our approach, that substantiate the theoretical claims.

Abstract. Behavior inconsistent with self-interest has been observed in many contexts. We argue that models designed to cope with these anomalies are inadequate to deal with a variety of social values. Our extension of the Fehr & Schmidt ‘inequity aversion ’ model is applied to results from dictator experiments in which the money to be divided is generated by the efforts of paired individuals in either one or two rooms. This production leads to sharing behavior qualitatively different from that found in other dictator experiments. The pattern of sharing can be explained by entitlements, equity, and the credibility of the experiment. 1.

Abstract. A procedure has been established in Vero ceils for the isolation of an intermediate compartment involved in protein transport from the ER to the Golgi apparatus. The two-step subcellular fractionation procedure consists of Percoll followed by Metrizamide gradient centrifugation. Using the previously characterized p53 as a marker protein, the average enrichment factor of the intermediate compartment was 41. The purified fraction displayed a unique polypeptide pattern. It was largely separated from the rough ER proteins ribophorin I, ribophorin II, BIP, and protein disulfide isomerase, as well as from the putative cis-Golgi marker N-acetylglucosamine-l-phosphodiester-t~-N-acetylglucosaminidase, the second of the two enzymes generating the lysosomal targeting signal
