We formulate the Dempster-Shafer formalism of belief functions [Shafer 761 in the spirit of logical inference systems. Our formulation (called the belief calculus) explicitly avoids the use of set-theoretic notations. As such, it serves as an alternative for the use of the Dempster-Shafer formalism for uncertain reasoning.

In this paper, we investigate the relation between a fund manager’s characteristics and fund performance, focusing specifically on the interrelations among fund managers’ tenure, seniority and fund performance in the Taiwan open-end equity mutual fund market from January 2001 to August 2006. To our knowledge, this is the first study looking into the potential joint impact of tenure and seniority on fund performance. Double sorting managers by tenure and seniority, we are able to estimate the extent to which the interaction between the two variables may impact fund performance. We measure a fund’s performance in four different ways, including raw return, market adjusted return, Jensen’s alpha and Sharpe ratio. The double-sorting procedure produces what we term the “double-indicator model”, which yields certain intriguing results. On average, a manager who has been in charge of a fund longer than 24.33 months tends to perform well. Moreover, the effect of seniority tends to be subsumed by tenure. Especially in the high-tenured group, the relation between seniority and fund performance turns out to be negative. One potential explanation is the effect of manager aging typically accompanied by the elevation of seniority, which negatively impacts fund performance. Therefore, we suggest that, on average, fund managers with high tenure and low seniority may potentially produce better fund performance than their peers.
