positioned nail tumours can be excised in the manner of a wide lateral longitudinal nail biopsy. The defect repair is performed with a bipedicled flap from the lateral aspect of the distal phalanx. Malignant tumours of the nail organ often require its complete ablation. These defects can be covered by a full

This report documents the methodology and findings of a study of the characteristics of Illinois public school district 31's reading programs in kindergarten through grade 8. For the study's purposes, the term "reading program " includes integrated language arts and humanities instruction. The study was conducted in response to a request from District 31 to investigate why the reading test scores of students were lower than expected, and did not necessarily match teachers ' perceptions of students' reading ability. Related to this issue is the extent to which there is alignment among reading assessments, the district's curriculum, and reading instruction. The North Central Regional Educational Lab (NCREL) proposed a study sufficiently wide in scope to develop and support recommendations regarding strengths and weaknesses in District 31's reading program. The report contains information on the background of the study, its design and methodology (development of data collection instruments, data collection, and

In the past several years, a trend has developed that in an earlier age would have seemed inappropriate and perhaps even morbid; the increased personalization of gravestones (memorials). What makes this trend interesting is the variety of shapes, designs, manufacturing processes, and types of personalization actually appearing on gravestones, including seven-inch LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens recessed into the face of memorials. This paper discusses gravestones (memorials) in a religious context. It examines the rapidly developing market for elaborately designed memorials both in their traditional forms, typically vertical and created out of granite with just a name and date of death, to memorials in every conceivable size, shape and colour portraying scenes of the deceased's everyday life. Although this paper concentrates on memorials found in Christian, mostly Catholic and Protestant cemeteries, references to

The hypothesis of a Neotropical origin of the Leishmania/Endotrypanum clade is reviewed. The position of the L. (Sauroleishmania) external to the subgenus L. (Leishmania) is not consistent with the Neotropical origin of the latter subgenus. It is suggested that this may be a consequence of a faster evolutionary rate in the L. (Sauroleishmania). The implications for the classsification of the phlebotomine sandflies of the hypothesis for a Neotropical origin of the Leishmania is also considered. The classification of Galati (1995) is proposed to be most consistent with the hypothesis of a Neotropical origin of the Leishmania, whilst classifications which place the New and Old World species in separate

Without people, a "disaster " cannot happen by most definitions of the word. Why, then, does so much work in weather and society forget the people? I have seen colourful PowerPoint presentations extolling the virtues of detailed GIS maps for analyzing critical infrastructure vulnerability to weather and other events—without mentioning schools or hospitals. One GIS-based loss model for floods (and earthquakes) did not include deaths and injuries because, according to the presenter, casualties were too difficult to consider, so they were assigned a loss value of zero. Many papers are published using quantitative scales and tick boxes to understand people's thoughts on and perceptions of weather without recognizing that numbers, scales, and judgments are always culturally contextual. Warning systems are a frequent example. Decades of research and practice, with some bibliographic examples here, indicate that weather-related warnings are most effective when considered to be a social process rather than a technical challenge. Warning systems need to considered as a long-term endeavor, integrated into sustainability and development processes, not as a one-off event that sets up sirens or emergency radio and SMS transmissions, activated
