In this paper we examine different ways to provide access to social networking services (SNS) on mobile phones. We present a concept to integrate the services seamlessly to the existing mobile user interface, which allows a quick glance to check how my friends are doing and an effortless way to send content to my SNSs. As we see that integration is the future of providing SNS access on mobile, we introduce a set of research topics that need to be addressed when providing seamless access to SNSs on mobiles.

Our research focuses on the use of visual analysis tools. In this paper, we examine the differences between expert and novice financial analysts using a visual analytics tool. Our formal study involving 10 experts and 10 novices indicates there are significant differences in usage patterns between the two groups that potentially impact the design of tools to aid in analysis and sensemaking.

We present research that investigates the amount of guidance required by users for precise back-of-device interaction. We explore how pointing effectiveness is influenced by the presence or absence of visual guidance feedback. Participants were asked to select targets displayed on an iPad device, by touching and releasing them from underneath the device. Another iPad was used to detect finger positions from the rear. Results showed that participants were able to select targets as accurately without visual feedback of finger position as they were with it. Additionally, no significant increase in workload was identified when visual feedback was removed. Our results show that users do not require complex techniques to visualize finger position on the rear of device. Visual feedback does not affect any performance parameters, such as effectiveness, perceived performance, and the number of trials needed to select a target. We also outline the implications of our findings and our future work to fully investigate the effect of visual guidance feedback.

Within the many different kind of context possible and useful, especially the location tells many things about the user’s overall situation. In turn, the knowledge about the user’s context from other sources could also help to narrow down the possible location of the user if only an imprecise location is available. GPS as the most popular system for location estimation fails inside buildings, where people spent most of their time. For a more general, reliable solution additional the augmentation with other positioning sensing techniques is needed. Possible approaches are inertial sensors, also useful for activity recognition, and widely available radio beacons like GSM and WiFi.

ACM 1-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. As spatial awareness technologies grow increasingly accurate and ubiquitous, the need for appropriate human-computer interfaces emerges. This paper summarizes our ongoing work in balancing the attention demanded from users with the utility provided through added reaction and comprehension. In so doing, we describe and discuss three techniques for mobile spatial interaction: “images first ” presentation, mobile augmented reality, and audio notifications.

ACM 978-1-59593-642-4/07/0004. In this work we describe Conversation Votes, a visualization to create new backchannels in conversation and augment collocated interaction. We expand the idea of a social mirror, a reflection of interaction, to incorporate direct user feedback in the form of anonymous voting. By capturing user input, the mirror becomes more demonstrative of context as participants add their interpretation into the visualization. The end result produces a visualization to provide a more accurate reflection of interaction and create flags of salient moments in conversation.
