Mobile devices have much potential to support older adults in their daily lives. However older adults have reported that they find mobile devices, such as existing mobile phones, difficult to learn to use. We argue that more research is needed to improve the learnability of mobile software applications for older adults. We present three different approaches for improving mobile device learnability: improving graphical icons, using multilayered interfaces, and augmenting the mobile interface. Categories and Subject Descriptors H.5 Information interfaces and presentation (e.g., HCI); H.5.2

User-Centered Design of Smart Products

by Rudy Den Buurman - Ergonomics , 1997
"... In and around our homes and o ces we are confronted with a rapidly increasing variety of smart products, such as microwave ovens, video-recorders, facsimile equipment, and automatic teller machines. For casual users, particularly, the interaction with these modern electronic products is potentially ..."

Evaluation/methodology, User-centered design.

by Simon Tucker, Ofer Bergman, Anand Ramamoorthy, Steve Whittaker
"... People are often required to catch up on information they have missed in meetings, because of lateness or scheduling conflicts. Catching up is a complex cognitive process where people try to understand the current conversation without access to prior discussion. We develop and evaluate a novel Catch ..."

content. We tested whether providing Catchup gist overcomes the potential disadvantage that people must join even later- because catching up takes time. Catchup users understood meetings 70 % better than controls who simply joined late. They were more confident of their understanding and indicated a

Integrating Extreme Programming and User-Centered Design ⋆

by Zahid Hussain, Martin Lechner, Harald Milchrahm, Sara Shahzad, Wolfgang Slany, Martin Umgeher, Peter Wolkerstorfer
"... Abstract. The success of a software development project is associated not only with tools and technologies, but it also depends on how much the development process helps to be user-centered and developer-oriented. Involving customers in the process and being people-oriented, Extreme Programming (XP) ..."

Our approach to application development focuses on the adoption of XP and User-Centered Design (UCD), emphasizing iterative user-interface development involving usability engineers and end-users. The paper describes the process of integrating XP with user-centered design and shows how

Adapting usability investigations for agile user-centered design

by Desirée Sy - Journal of Usability Studies , 2007
