Quaternary structure dependence of kinetic hole burning and conformational substrates interconversion in hemoglobin
- Biochemistry
, 2003
"... ABSTRACT: Using a sol-gel encapsulation technique, we have prepared samples of CO saturated human adult hemoglobin locked in the R or T quaternary conformation. We report time-resolved spectra of these samples in the Soret region following flash photolysis, in the time interval ranging from 250 ns t ..."

CO molecules in the T conformation and for deoxyHb molecules in the R conformation; it confirms the quaternary structure dependence of the hemoglobin energy landscape and suggests enhanced dynamics of ligation intermediate species such as T-state HbCO or R-state deoxyHb.
Modulation of Reactivity and Conformation within the T-Quaternary State of Human Hemoglobin: the Combined use of Mutagenesis and Sol-Gel Encapsulation. Biochemistry 2006
"... ABSTRACT: A range of conformationally distinct functional states within the T quaternary state of hemoglobin are accessed and probed using a combination of mutagenesis and sol-gel encapsulation that greatly slow or eliminate the T f R transition. Visible and UV resonance Raman spectroscopy are used ..."

Cooperativity in Scapharca Dimeric Hemoglobin: Simulation of Binding Intermediates and Elucidation of the Role of Interfacial Water
"... Cooperative binding of ligands to proteins can serve to increase their efficiency and to regulate their activity. Thus, understanding of the mechanism of cooperativity is one of the central concerns of molecular biology. For the tetrameric human hemoglobin (HbA), the cooperative mechanism involves a ..."

a reasonably well understood combination of tertiary and quaternary changes that occur during the binding process. The dimeric hemoglobin of Scapharca (HbI), which is composed of subunits with the same fold as in HbA, is also highly cooperative but the structural changes on ligand binding are small
Biophysical and Structural Studies on the Capsid Protein of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1: A New Drug Target?
"... AIDS affects 30 million people worldwide and is one of the deadliest epidemics in human history. It is caused by a retrovirus, HIV, whose mature capsid (enclosing the RNA with other proteins) is formed by the assembly of several hundred copies of a protein, CA*. The C-terminal domain of such protei ..."

type dimeric CAC, those which stabilize the dimer and those directly destabilizing it. Furthermore, there is an interplay between quaternary and secondary structure within the monomer since many side chains at the interface are also energetically important for the folding of the monomeric intermediate

"... In this thesis, two sets of experimental studies in bosonic and fermionic gases are described. In the first part of the thesis, itinerant ferromagnetism was studied in a strongly interacting Fermi gas of ultracold atoms. The observation of nonmonotonic behavior of lifetime, kinetic energy, and size ..."

Our observations imply that itinerant ferromagnetism of delocalized fermions is possible without lattice and band structure, and our data validate the most basic model for ferromagnetism introduced

The principle aim of this dissertation is to investigate the philosophical application of quantum information theory to interpretational issues regarding the theory of quantum mechanics. Recently, quantum information theory has emerged as a potential source for such an interpretation. The main question with which this dissertation will be concerned is whether or not an information-theoretic interpretation can serve as a conceptually acceptable interpretation of quantum mechanics. It will be argued that some of the more obvious approaches – that quantum information theory shows us that ultimately the world is made of information, and quantum Bayesianism – fail as philosophical interpretations of quantum mechanics. However, the information-theoretic approach of Clifton, Bub, and Halvorson introduces Einstein’s distinction between principle theories and constructive theories, arguing that quantum mechanics is best understood as an information-theoretic principle theory. While I argue that this particular approach fails, it does offer a viable new philosophical role for information theory. Specifically, an investigation of interpretationally successful principle theories such as Newtonian mechanics, special relativity, and general
The diverse and expanding role of mass spectrometry in structural and molecular biology Prelude-The coming of age of biomolecular mass spectrometry
"... Abstract The emergence of proteomics has led to major technological advances in mass spectrometry (MS). These advancements not only benefitted MS-based high-throughput proteomics but also increased the impact of mass spectrometry on the field of structural and molecular biology. Here, we review how ..."
