As this master thesis marks the end of my studies at Delft University of Technology, I would like to use this opportunity and thank everyone who has influenced my two-year journey. Those last two years have not been easy. In fact, it has been the most challenging, stressful, and at the same time- the most inspiring, productive, and exciting journey. Journey, which has completely changed my life and has prepared me for new challenges and opportunities. I owe a very special debt to the ex president of Georgia – Mikheil Saakashvili, for initiating a scholarship program for Georgian students abroad, willing to pursue master’s degree. I would like to thank Mr. Saakashvili for giving me a chance to be one of those students, and for fully sponsoring my studies at TU Delft. I must express special gratitude to my graduation committee for being way more supportive then I could ever imagine. I would like to thank them for all their feedback, support, and encouragement, for being very understanding, and shortly, for making it possible for me to finalize my thesis and to graduate. I would like to acknowledge the selfless help and support of my supervisor – Dr. Huib Aldewereld. His guidance and support encouraged me to be motivated and to keep working on the thesis. I would like to thank him for all his time that he has spent on reading my thesis, on giving me direct comments, and further motivation. I had times when I felt lost in my own thesis, and I was ready to give up, but Dr. Aldewereld always managed to encourage and motivate me. I would like to thank him for arranging meetings (lots of meetings) with me to discuss my progress, whenever I asked for it, despite his very

Abstract: Online learning initia-tives over the past decade have become increasingly comprehen-sive in their selection of courses and sophisticated in their presen-tation, culminating in the recent announcement of a number of consortium and startup activities that promise to make a university education on the internet, free of charge, a real possibility. At this pivotal moment it is appropriate to explore the potential for obtaining comprehensive bioinformatics training with currently existing free video resources. This article pre-sents such a bioinformatics curric-ulum in the form of a virtual course catalog, together with editorial commentary, and an assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and likely future directions for open online learning in this field. Online Learning Comes of Age Online academic ‘‘courseware’ ’ at the university level has now been available to the public for a decade, the earliest concerted effort having originated in 2002 with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their OpenCour-seWare initiative

Dedicated to the Lotus Feet of the revered Sadguru. This thesis presents a new active mask (AM) framework and an algorithm for segmenta-tion of digital images, particularly those of punctate patterns from fluorescence microscopy. Fluorescence microscopy has greatly facilitated the task of understanding complex sys-tems at cellular and molecular levels in recent years. Segmentation, an important yet dif-ficult problem, is often the first processing step following acquisition. Our team previously demonstrated that a stochastic active contour based algorithm together with the concept of

1Shannon Meets Nyquist: Capacity Limits of Sampled Analog Channels

by Yuxin Chen, Yonina C. Eldar, Andrea J. Goldsmith
"... We explore two fundamental questions at the intersection of sampling theory and information theory: how is channel capacity affected by sampling below the channel’s Nyquist rate, and what sub-Nyquist sampling strategy should be employed to maximize capacity. In particular, we first derive the capaci ..."
