Abstract
ESA’s high energy astrophysical missions XMM-Newton in the X-ray and INTEGRAL in the gamma ray regime are both operated from ESA’s European Space Operations Centre at Darmstadt, Germany. The designed lifetime and even the extended lifetime have in both cases passed. However both spacecraft with their respective payload are operating without major degradation and scientific demand is very high. The Flight Control Teams of the two mission are working in synergy since 2008. We will describe the cross-fertilization benefits of the merge and its impact on operations, cost and scientific programme execution. We will analyse the potential of the two missions extrapolating into the next decade regarding spacecraft performance, radiation induced degradation and fuel consumption respectively the concepts to reduce the latter. In addition we describe the new architecture of the Mission Control System that is currently put in place migrating onto new state of the art hardware and operating systems with the focus on synergetic use keeping the same redundancy level. I. ESAs high energy astrophysical observatories XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL SA is operating within it’s Horizon 2000 programme two major astrophysical observatories in the high energy regime of X- and Gamma-rays.
