Abstract
Abstract Current object database management systems support user-defined conversion functions to update the database once the schema has been modified. Two main strategies are possible when implementing such database conversion functions: immediate or lazy database updates. In this paper, we propose a correctness criteria for implementing conversion functions as lazy database updates. We also show that the algorithms defined in [1] are correct. 1 Introduction Schema evolution in an object database system (ODBS) refers to the ability to change both the schema and consequently the database [2], [3], [4]. Every time the schema is modified the database has to be updated to be brought up to a consistent state with respect to the new schema. Normally a schema can be changed using special primitives, see for example [2]. As a consequence of a schema change, in some database systems the database is modified automatically by executing so called user-defined conversion functions [1], [4], [5], [6], [7]. A conversion function takes as input parameters the old and new schema class definitions and when executed transforms the objects of the database to conform to the new schema.
