Introduction Cognitive science is the study of human cognitive processes such as problem solving, memory and learning. Traditionally, cognitive scientists have studied these processes in isolation from each other and from the environment the agent lives in. Only recently, situated cognition researchers have emphasized the role that interaction with others as well as the environment plays in our cognitive development [Lav88]. Lave argues that apprenticeship is a more appropriate metaphor for cognitive development in general as "apprentices learn to think, argue, act and interact in increasingly knowledgeable ways with people who do something well, by doing it with them as legitimate, peripheral participants." Apprenticeship has also been used as a metaphor in language development [Rog90] [Bru83] [Wel81] and career development of scientists [JS97].
