Fuzzy logic is analyzed from the point of view of formal logic; the underlying calculi and their properties are surveyed. AMS subject classification: 03B52, 03B50, 06BXX. Key words: fuzzy logic, many-valued logic, residuated lattices. 1 Introduction This report 1 is an extended version (by Section 6) of the paper written for a tutorial to be given at the IFSA meeting at Prague, to appear in Tatra Mountains Mathematical Publications; this extended version should serve as material for the FUZZ-IEEE tutorial. The first half of the paper is a varied and extended version of [12]. Sections 1-4 and 6 were written by H'ajek; Section 5 was written by Godo. Full elaboration is to be found in the prepared book [13].
