Abstract

We describe MOA a strongly typed, strict functional language with arrays. A prototype compiler generating MIMD code for a transputer network is then outlined. MOA arrays are multidimensional and include shape descriptors (forms). Forms are inferred statically for efficient placement and deterministic routing during parallel array operations. The system supports data-parallel programming in a pure functional style while minimizing communication costs. As a result test programs compiled and executed correctly on first trial. A reconfigurable parallel adder illustrates the language's simplicity and efficiency. Timings show quasi-linear accelerations with network size and a detectable gain from 2- to 3-dimensional networks, thus proving the feasibility of scalable functional programming on arrays.
