Abstract
This paper presents our experience building multimodal interfaces integrating Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). Voice is certainly the most natural way to communicate nevertheless, speaker-independent, large vocabulary, unconstrained and/or continuous speech is not yet state of the art in ASR. For this reason we chose to integrate into an interface a speaker adaptive isolated words ASR system. The use of an ASR sub-system based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) , that are represented by State Transitions Networks (STN), led us to choose STN as a formal specification language. STN has been used to describe the whole system and not only the user interface to ensure a better software quality. An application of this design technique in the A.RE.S (Automatic REporting by Speech) project, is also presented.
