Abstract
. We present two methods of implementing broadcast or multicast communication on a high-speed network that provides point-to-point packet transmission. Buffer overflow at the destinations is a major cause of packet loss on high-speed broadcast networks. Because of packet loss and retransmission, the rate of useful broadcasting may be much less than could be sustained by either the medium, the source, or the destinations. To avoid packet loss due to buffer overflow, we schedule the transmission of packets so that no two nodes transmit a packet to the same node at any time. The first method we present is a store-and-forward mechanism that requires processing capability of the nodes. The second method constructs a transmission schedule from Broadcast Squares, a special class of Latin Squares.
