Often times an output device, such as an inkjet or laser printer, does not possess the lightness dynamic range that is present in the original scene (e.g., that of a CRT or a glossy photographic original). When the large input dynamic range is rescaled to fit into the smaller output dynamic range, significant image contrast may be lost. Various lightness-remapping schemes have been formulated to account for these dynamic range differences.
